Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.
(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival

Highlight below
The subject of the main clause (such firms) presumes a prior reference to the firms in question. Furthermore,
the logical subject of to survive and the logical complement of required should be made explicit. All three
demands are met by B, the best choice. Choices A, C, and D, with no reference to the firms in question, meet
none of these demands. In choice E, the illogical and awkward use of a prepositional phrase (for firms' survival)
buries the needed initial reference to firms in a possessive modifier.
------------------------

Their explaination confused me. Can someone explain better between (B) and (E)?

B makes the most sense. Agree with explanations. Only B uses right modifiers at the right place

I would not have picked B, but B makes sense after reading the explantion.

"Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required..., such firms tend to be very large "

required of whom?
such firms => refers to "firms" that should have been earlier in the sentence.

But why we prefer "require of" than "require fore"?

B maintains parallelism with reference to the last part of the sentence.... when we use E.. thats not possible.

I think its because in E "firm's survival" becomes the subject and not the "firm"

Sorry for the late explanation...
Of all the options ,the closest options are B and E..
Explanation for B as compared to E ...

Take out the phrase from the sentence ...

"an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand"

and then compare...

Here is B.....

Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required of firms to survivein the electronics industry ,such firms tend to be very large.

and E

Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required for firms' survival in the electronics industry, such firms tend to be very large.

Here are some of the points I could find out
----phrase such large firms....is effect of phrase because of........(it is cause).....
----Using cause and effect..b sounds better
----consise and clear meaning in B as compared to E...

thats all I could think of...
