An easy way to remember is "mistook X for Y". Hope it helps.

D for me...
Mistook X for Y is the idiomatic usage....
A, B, C are incorrect for the above reason...
E is incorrect because..'for that of' is not proper usage..

Mistake X for Y is the correct idiom. Cross off A, B and C.
Answer choice E implies something awkward: that (sugar) of his own unrefined salt.
Hence, D is the answer. 30 secs :D
