This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The word exception is a noun. The adjective form of this word should be used to describe the noun kick.

Although this answer choice corrects the original Parts of Speech error by using the adjective exceptional to describe the noun kick, it creates a Dangling Modifier. The original sentence begins with a modifier: Becoming one of Australia's most popular athletes. A modifier should be placed right next to the noun it describes. The only noun that this modifier can logically modify is Ian Thorpe. However, what immediately follows the modifier is five Olympic gold medals and Olympic medals cannot be athletes.
