Hey all! Another interesting Business school applications analogy with a taste of the epic-ness created by Gods I call Humanity.
This one is going to require a little effort to understand and digest coz I will give you a heads up right now- "YOU HAVE DONE IT TOO"
So, lets begin!
I recently read a few articles on the organizational cultures and industrial cultures that have been set out through history and it is a general belief that if you need to assess your fit, you need to find a broad range of industries and see what makes sense to you then upon learning what matters most to you, you need to find if you would fit into an organization- do the people find you interesting? do you find others interesting to work with? and moreover, do you find it easier to navigate the organization- AKA Do you speak their language?
Okay, if you're seeing the picture of Investment banking and Football culture, you are guessing it right. This article or rather a reality check post is about defining what issues are related if you end up finding an interest in an industry in which you don't necessarily fit.
Am I going to create a fuss on how the workplace is toxic?
Not really, I am merely going to give a perspective and I welcome any oppositions to it in the thread.
Usually, people suggest that you need to assess your fit and when choosing a job you need to find a company that suits your personal preference.
Now, let's say you are one of the few like me who wouldn't fit anywhere if you wanted to and are constantly looked down on for living the life in a way that makes you comfortable- as everyone else is doing except that they have more similarities, making the trend usually comfortable for them to navigate- but not for you. When you talk about equity- that has more layers than your mind can comprehend. This is one of them. Payment is not the only thing!
Coming back to the topic.... I want you to watch this interesting video on Conformity before you read further. It is really funny yet has a satire to itself.
VIDEOI will assume that you have watch the video and to give you a little context. It opposes what I said above- a little bit.
HOWWWW???
It is literally confirming...
No, it is not.
Let me tell you why
I said that it is rather comfortable for others to stay in the same culture. But the truth is, the comfort for them lies more between a tradeoff- a tradeoff between what they are okay with and what other's think of them. Bringing into loop- CONFORMITY!
The level of discomfort caused by others looking down on you is significantly (no matter how much) higher than the level of discomfort caused by bending to the culture itself, leading to a chain reaction of "workers" of an organization being similar to what norm has been set by the majority.
A real life context of this example can be found in- women trying to fit into more conservative industries (alpha industries as most people cal it), minorities trying to follow their cultures in a country of people with a dominant cultural majority etc.
The severe effects of conformity come from the fact- "The one who doesn't bend, Breaks!"
Why the hell am I giving you a lecture on Conformity???
Well, just wait! We are almost there!
Conformity is the cause of a loss of individual preference and is a major reason for psychological issues such as stress and anxiety that leads to major diseases such as, heart diseases, migraine etc that are cause of majority of deaths in the world as we knew it pre-covid.
Also, is a reverse of inclusion. Yes, I did share an article on "Democracy being disruptive of inclusion" for the exact same reason. But if you look at it this way, it seems true. And I am not saying this out of no where. If you look at those experiments, you will see the evidence supporting my statements.
So, what exactly does it have to do with leadership?
Leadership comes from individuality and from the fact that leaders are the ones who have the vision to challenge conformity. Yet majority of people coming out of the Business schools conform. They conform because there is no place for them in the world and challenging conformity will lead to a............. you guessed it- no promotion, no attention, and in some cases .... Job loss.
Even then people challenge conformity and take up the stress of being challenged. Those leaders are truly the ones who have my respect- not that it means anything to you but if you knew me in person, you'd know that that's one thing that is hard to get from me.
Life is challenging for these people as no one will support them and when they succeed, that means something. This is a reason when an individual who doesn't conform wins something- it becomes a big deal because the challenges were obviously more superlative compared to the others who conformed.
The learning I want to point out here is that if you see someone not being just like you, try to respect that the individual preference is an essential component of the growth of the Universe and by challenging these people and by calling out names will only make you look bad. There is a theory of Victim and the oppressor- but probably a post on it some other day.
I think, to be truly inclusive- and I don't mean the B-school jibber jabber- you need to find comfort in differences and similarity should never be a factor to find friends rather the willingness to accommodate differences will expose you to a world that is more healthy and accepts you for you.
Does it mean you should accept everyone?
NOPE!
As a personal example, I once broke it off with someone whose existence and actions are the reason for every issue I have faced in life, and I felt that despite the difference acceptance, it would not make sense to me to accommodate such a person.
If you're not accommodating a difference for a truly personal reason than a group based reason, you would make the right choice by accepting otherwise. If it is conforming to group pressure, you're probably a worker but to be a leader, you need to understand the concept of not conforming.
