What are the criterias for rating these companies?


"How we pick the 100 Best To choose the 100 Best, we conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America. More than 81,000 employees from 353 companies responded to a 57-question survey created by the Great Place to Work Institute.

Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the survey, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees. The remaining third is based on our Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about demographics, pay, and benefits, and open-ended questions on philosophy, communication, etc.

Any company that is at least seven years old with more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible. To nominate your company, go to https://www.greatplacetowork.com. After our evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees' faith in management, we may exclude that company from the list."

Having been involved with my company's submission and application, I can say that the "Culture Audit" questionnaire/process is very thorough and requires a massive amount of information on all sorts of benefits, perks, HR programs (flexible working, family leave, etc.), compensation, training, etc.

Interesting that, just based on an eyeyball analysis, only a couple of the top 20 are also top MBA employers.

No Exxon, Shell, BP, Chevron, Con, Marathon, Valero, (you get the point)

maybe the workers that survived the layoffs were so happy to still be employed, they rated their employers high

I used to worked at a place where the 100 Best list was a huge deal. They spent a lot of time putting together their pitch for it and trying to stay on that list. The random surveys for it usually went out around June - and the week before it went out, it was typical for the company to announce "great news!" about an extra holiday or something.

One year I got the survey and I remember the bulk of it dealing with benefits/lifestyle perks and trust in management.

Companies offer different reasons people want to work there: lifestyle, $$$, important or meaningful work, prestige, etc - and this is more of a good marketing tool for a particular kind of company.

A lot of non-tech engineering companies were not on the list. For example, mostly if not all big name OG&C companies that are in the F500. I think the reasoning is the management. Usually top talented engineers don't stick around in industry and go do their own thing.

Also keep in mind that not all companies opt in to be considered for the rankings. (Many of which are direct competitors' of those listed).
