Hello,
I just completed my freshman year at an Ivy league school and am interested in eventually going to B-school. I have an interest in romance languages, as well as quantitative fields like Computer Science and Statistics. I'm also interested in investment banking. A lot of the finance types at my school major in Economics. I have to declare my major by next year.
The only difference between a concentration and a major is the # of classes taken. The concentration requirements lean towards more applied classes/less theoretical. I'm leaving towards the double concentration instead of one major. Unfortunately I want to study abroad and won't have enough time to do a single major + concentration (minor). The Econ department at my school is notorious for having a few weed out classes with a forced curve to B-. About 25% of each graduating class is filled with Econ majors. I'm aware that having a high GPA is essential for B school applications. Currently my GPA is 3.8/4.0.
Plan is to work for a few years after undergrad in the finance world: IB, Consulting, etc. And then apply for business school later. Assuming equivalent GPA/GMAT, what would look better for B-schools?
Double Concentration: Statistics & Romance Languages
Single Major: Economics
Single Major: Statistics
Hi there
x160687You have posted interesting question.
Since you want to work in Finance world and later go to business school, possibly pursue Finance specialization or any related Quantitative one, Statistics Major would be the best way to go.
Economics would be second best.
If you can go for double concentration, that is fine also, since Statistics is still one of them.
These days Finance is heavily Quantitative as being merge of math, stat, computer science/programming and what not (think physics etc. )
Having and edge in that fields definitely makes you competitive.
And having Ivy league school as undergrad on top of that on your CV will make impact on admission committee, I will assume let say in Europe.
If you decide Europe is for you, I would recommend London as Finance center, maybe Frankfurt as alternative.
My choice would be LBS, LSE (Master programs), Imperial.
