Solution

Given:
    • Between 1950 and 1960 the population of country A increased by 3.5 million people
    • The amount of increase between 1960 and 1970 was 1.75 million more than the increase from 1950 to 1960

To find:
    • The total amount of increase in population in Country A between 1950 and 1970

Approach and Working:
Let the population in 1950 = x million
    • Population in 1960 = x + 3.5 million
    • Population in 1970 = x + 3.5 + 3.5 + 1.75 = x + 8.75 million

Therefore, increase in population from 1950 to 1970 = x + 8.75 – x = 8.75 million

Hence, the correct answer is Option E

Answer: E

D. 7 million
E. 8.75 million

let population before 1950 = x
1950-1960= x+3.5
1960-1970=x+3.5+1.75 = x+5.25+3.5 ; x+8.75

increase x+8.75-x ; 8.75 IMO E

Between 1950 and 1960 = 3.5m
Between 1960 and 1970 = 3.5 + 1.75 = 5.25m
Between 1950 and 1970 = 3.5 + 5.25 = 8.75m

Answer E
