Hi all,
I'm going to be attending a masters of accounting program this year and while I enjoy accounting to a large extent, I also want to really get into a more strategic finance-oriented role. My ideal job is corporate development, but I know that these jobs will be darn near impossible to get with only Big 4 audit experience on my resume as they usually like BB IB/MBB Consultants. On the flip side, however, I'm not necessarily married to only doing corporate development work. I could also see myself doing FP&A if it a job that is heavy on "analysis" and less so on "financial planning" if you understand what I mean. A lot of FP&A jobs seem to be accounting jobs really and while I don't necessarily need to be doing M&A type of work to be happy, I do want to be doing capital budgeting, real options analysis, NPV/IRR analysis (I guess any sort of financial modeling or stats-related work), etc. on the job as opposed to payroll/benefits budgeting, month-end closes, internal controls testing, etc. which a lot of corporate accounting roles involve. I've had a small taste of that and honestly did not enjoy it at all.
So my basic questions are if I can eventually get into a role doing the things I mentioned above with a background in audit and what types of roles/positions would involve this outside of IB/Consulting/Corp Dev as those jobs are basically ruled out for me at the moment. I'd particularly like to avoid IB/PE/HF routes because of the lifestyle/culture issues, but I would be open to advice on getting into Management Consulting/Corp Dev on the off chance those are a possiblity from audit.
