Official Explanation

Answer: C
The words "differ from" signal that there is a comparison. In this case, the comparison is between the actual posture of dinosaurs and the posture as depicted by certain images. As written, the sentence is incorrect: it compares the actual standing posture with "every visual depiction." We can't compare a posture with a picture as those are unlike things. Choice (B) makes the same mistake, comparing a posture with pictures. (C) makes a proper comparison between "standing postures" and "those of." The word "those" takes the place of "standing postures," so we're comparing the actual standing postures with the standing postures as depicted. (D) makes the same mistake as (A) and (B). (E) is complicated but is yet another comparison error. It compares characteristics of standing posture with "those" (characteristics) of visual depictions. Those are different things, so (C) must be correct.

Hope this helps.

Bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differs from virtually every visual depiction of them created before the 1970s, when scientists reevaluated their assumptions about tripod-style balance.
(A) Bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differs from
(B) Bipedal dinosaurs stood in a posture that differs from
(C) Bipedal dinosaurs exhibited standing postures that differ from those of
(D) The standing posture of bipedal dinosaurs differs from
(E) The characteristics of bipedal dinosaurs' standing posture differ from those of

OA is C. But in the non-underlined part of sentence, what is "them" referring to ?Those(meaning postures) or B'Dinosaurs? Isn't them is ambiguous?

OE:Answer: C

Option C is unambiguously correct.
When it comes to Pronoun, always look for a Noun which can be substituted by that Pronoun, making the meaning of the sentence "logically" clear. It is very important.

Getting back to your question, "them" referring to ?Those(meaning postures) or B'Dinosaurs?
When in such a doubt, replace the Pronoun with the Noun in actual sentence and see whether the meaning is logically clear or correct.
- "them" replacing "those (posture)" gives a sentence: "...differ from 'posture of' virtually every visual depiction of 'posture'...".

"Posture of depiction of Posture...", it does not make any sense, but "Posture of depiction of B'Dinosaurs" does.
So, the option C is correct and uses the pronouns without ambiguity.
Hope this helped..!!!!!

A B & C all compare the posture of the dinosaurs to the picture, not the picture’s depiction of their posture.

E changes the meaning to compare the characteristics of the real dinosaurs’ posture to the those of the depicted dinosaurs.

D is the right answer.

let's consider choice D

The standing posture of bipedal dinosaurs differs from + virtually every visual depiction of them(part of a Original sentence)......

here the standing posture of bipedal dinosaurs is compared with every visual depiction of bipedal dinosaurs. this seems to be a correct comparison.
