Bocconi vs ESSEC  [#permalink]

Hi everyone

I'm really confused about which offer to accept and am hoping all of you can help. Currently, I have received admission into the Msc in Management at ESSEC and the Msc in Marketing Management at Bocconi and am quite unsure which one to pursue. Frankly speaking, money isn't a factor in my decision.

I am looking to break into marketing for luxury fashion and speak basic/conversational Italian and French, with my French being slightly better. Also, I'm Canadian.

Which one is the better program? My biggest decision factor is career prospects post grad, which, in my opinion, look better at ESSEC as the ranking seems to be higher and that LVMH is a large recruiter.

Hi!

I am Lucia from Italy, and I am a current MSc in Management student at ESSEC.

I am replying to your query as two years ago I was exactly in your shoes. I had been admitted both to Bocconi and ESSEC and I could not decide which school would have been better for me, as they're both excellent and with exposure on the luxury world

However, I eventually choose ESSEC and I can tell you I am completely satisfied with my choice. Being passionate about the luxury industry, ESSEC appeared to be the best choice for both the existence of the LVMH Chair, a specialization path on luxury brand management, and the career perspectives within the industry in France and abroad.

I had talked to students that attended the chair before deciding, and I am glad to share with you my experience, hoping it can help you in making your choice!

I started the MSc in Management at ESSEC in Paris in 2015 and after spending one semester in Singapore, I went to New York for my internship in a French company that produces and markets luxury fragrances worldwide. This experience allowed me to apply to the LVMH Chair in October 2016 equipped with a strong profile, and fortunately I got the admission to the chair, which I started this January.

Being part of the ESSEC LVMH Chair is everything you are looking for to start your career in luxury marketing with a bang. For six months, you'll be able to take courses on luxury with extremely knowledgeable professors (for example, a professor we had had been CEO of Armani France and Balmain for years). Moreover, you'll have the chance to attend seminars with managers from different LVMH Maisons: they come on campus and share their experience with us and it's a great way to network! But that's not it: you'll have the chance to visit LVMH companies as well. With my group, we visited Ruinart in Reims, the Dior Academy and Guerlain in Paris, and Hublot and Tag Heuer in Switzerland. There, we presented the Marketing Director of Hublot our field business project, on which we worked for three months under his guidance.

Besides all these amazing experiences, the chair will provide you with the right contacts to land an internship, VIE, apprenticeship or full position in France and abroad.

It is thanks to the ESSEC brand and the chair on my cv that all the students admitted have got an internship or a position within the LVMH group. Even the competitors are very interested in such specialization: for example, I'll start my internship at Cartier in Paris in a few days!

I hope my experience has been informative to you, and I hope it will be easier to make your choice now ;)

Best,

Lucia

Hi

Thank you so much for your reply, it was incredibly helpful! Just a few specific questions:

1) how was your experience living in Cergy? I've visited Milan and it's beautiful so I'm not sure about Cergy at all. Is it safe and accessible to Paris?

2) how competitive is it to get into the chair and what is the student profile like? Do they all usually have a background in fashion via internships? I have worked for Tommy Hilfiger for a bit, but my work experience and internships are in finance (looking to make a career change).

Thank you so much once again!

Hi!

Sorry for my late reply.

1. Living in Cergy is not that bad, as ESSEC provides student residence where International and French students gather and life on campus is very active! There are 120 associations you can join, sports and parties inside the school, so it's not boring at all. Then, what normally students do, is to move to Paris after one or two trimesters. Commuting is not that long (around 45 mins) and pretty safe, and life in Paris is great! Since you can design your whole timetable, you might spend only two days or theee days on campus and for the rest you're free.

2. Normally people that apply to the chair have at least one experience in luxury or fashion. The important thing when you apply is to show your passion through the interviews. I think an experience at TH is a good start!

First of all, Congratulations on getting admits to 2 competitive Masters in Management programs.
As far as the luxury market is concerned, both ESSEC and Bocconi are good options although ESSEC is at a marginally higher advantage.

Additionally, the economic climate of France is currently more favorable than that of Italy.
You also mentioned that your French is better than your Italian ; this will be an advantage in case you want to move back to canada post your degree.
Since French is one of the popular spoken languages in Canada, you could hone your language skills during your studies and become proficient in the language by the time you move to your home country.

Pay-scale and program currriculum are another two areas where ESSEC earns brownie points over Bocconi.
The placement salaries at ESSEC are comparatively higher than that of Bocconi.
Moreover, the program syllabus of ESSEC is more inclined towards general management whereas Bocconi’s MSc programme becomes more specific to solely marketing.
The job opportunities for both are practically the same, so unless you want to specilize completely in marketing , ESSEC’S MiM programme is a better bet.
