I saw in some places, like the Manhattan publication, The GMAT Uncovered, that no study materials should be brought to the test center. I am thinking about studying a little before I take the test. Why can't I bring study materials to the test center?

You may be able to, just have to leave them in the locker but you are not supposed to be able to use them during a break. They are on the list of "prohibited items" just like cell phones

How early do you plan to reach the center? Even if you plan to be there 2 hrs before your slot, GMAT is not a test where last minute cramming will help you in the least. So it will not be useful, even if you carry it along.
My suggestion is to lock up all books a day before the test and refuse to look at anything except may be some formulas if you have jotted them down. At the test center, those people are paranoid about what you are doing. You don't want to raise eyebrows by showing up with study material. Just try to relax in the moments before the test. That is the best preparation.
