Two principles are essentially tested here. The first is the use of the comparative idiom -such as/like – to denote examples. The appropriate format is - such x as. - So we will drop all -such x like. - choices. A, C and E are out on this count.
The second theme is that of series parallelism, in which the three arms of the series namely 1. cultivation of 2. harvesting of and 3. exploitation of , have to be parallelly expressed. Choice B does that in the form of nouns and gerund and hence is the answer
B was a narrowed choice of mine, but I disregarded the choice because the list had "cultivation", "harvesting" and then "exploitation". Why do these not have to be parallel? I believe an explanation on this issue would help with a lot of my misunderstandings with SC.
Nice explanation, daagh - I'd also add that the definite article "the" before "harvesting of" (...the harvesting of) makes "harvesting" a noun, as well, so they give you a couple of clues as to its parallel structure. Nice work!
