Hey everyone, I could really use a bit of advice regarding my GMAT experience last Friday.
I have been prepping for a few months using MGMAT materials, the OG, and the GMATPrep exams. I started my prep by consistently scoring in the 540 range on practice exams. I've done a lot of work and have been able to bring my score up to a consistent 630 range. My high was a 690 (Q 45 V 40). Lately my quant score has averaged around 44, but my verbal has been all over the place. My final practice exam was using the GMATPrep exam pack 1 and I scored a 630 (Q 47 V 30). I was happy to see my performance on quant (an all-time high), and knew that if I could work hard on verbal I would be able to boost my score (I'm targeting a 660-680). So I did a lot of review with verbal and did refreshers for quant during the week leading up to the exam.
I finally took the GMAT for my first time on Friday. The whole exam was a bit of a blur, but I felt like I performed well on both the quant and verbal sections. I knew that I didn't "crush" the exam, but I thought that I performed at my average rate. I then clicked through the demographic questions and saw my score:
590 (Q 36 V 35)
I have not scored this low on a quant section in a very long time. I really don't know what went wrong and am slightly confused since I scored a 47 just days earlier. Anyways, I'm guessing that I just need to go back to the basics and review fundamentals before I retake the exam again. It's just shocking to see a 36 in quant (tied for my all-time low) when I haven't scored sub-40 since June. Do you think that nerves played into this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm sorry to hear that your score was lower than expected. Several factors can affect score. Here are some questions to consider:
-Was your timing off? Did you follow a time management and strategic guessing plan? Going too fast or getting stuck somewhere can lead to a loss in confidence or a rise in anxiety.
-Was anything different on the exam compared with sim test question types, quality or level?
-Did you not follow proper technique (e.g. falling back on intuition) or not take notes, for example?
-How did you feel while taking the exam? The clock, exam stress and environment can have serious impact.
-Do you change your sleep routine, diet, exercise, etc. prior to the exam?
-Did you warm up before the test or go in cold?
Next time you do practice/simulation exams, try and take it in similar conditions as exam day (time of day, environment). Do exactly what brought you success on the sim tests.
Best of luck as you prepare to retake the exam!

Thanks for your response, Jessica. I tried to do my best regarding taking the test in similar conditions (at the library, during the same time of day, using the GMATPrep software, etc.) and took the test as I normally would (writing notes, taking breaks, etc.) I'm just guessing that I got a little nervous or something. I did feel that the quant problems were pretty difficult. However I have read that the MGMAT, OG, and GMATPrep quant problems should be a similar difficulty. Not really sure what happened... Is it common to pull a 47 on GMATPrep and then a significantly lower score on the real exam, or should the problems be relatively similar in difficulty?
