Is there a formalized way in which b-schools are classified into the ultra-elite, elite, and non-elite clusters? Could someone point me to some documentation on this? Google was not too helpful.

Its pretty much specific to this site and how things are viewed. At the top of each forum I believe are a list of schools in that cluster. Its a general idea of how schools are viewed...they are very similar to the USNews rankings but organized by schools that are considered par.

Basically the ultra elites are the M7 schools, elites are top 15 schools...and so on in groups of 5-10.

I came up with this grouping (ultra elite, elite, transelite, etc.) based on cluster analysis some time ago. The main advantage that I saw with these groups is that they allow candidates to break away from the Procrustean urge to try to trim the number of schools into an arbitrary number such as "top 5" or "top 10". The hope is that students students will broaden their application horizons beyond just a few schools by recognizing that schools tend to cluster together in broadly similar reputation groupings. Of course, there is much more to selecting a school than where it sits on some league table, but I believe that there is some incremental value to the cluster approach.

Generally the Ultra Elites are considered very stable, looking at their standings over the years they may move a little bit but usually only among each other. Their reputations took years to develop so they are pretty set. A lot of other schools like Tuck, NYU, Ross, Duke, Haas, Darden are established as the next bunch and once again they are pretty stable. If you go to a top school its a pretty safe bet that it will be a top school when you retire.

Does anyone know why it is referenced as "M7"? Just out of curiosity.. what does the M stand for?

M = magnificent; this is the name given to a group of ultra elite institutions that supposedly have an informal working group to discuss policy, initiatives and the applicant pool.
