this is an offshoot from some comments in another thread, but is anyone else looking to buy a new watch before starting b-school? do any current students feel this is even a necessity (provided that you don't show up to an interview wearing a $10 calculator watch)? i currently own a pretty simple but somewhat dressy citizen watch w/stainless steel band and a silver-toned face. not really sure if i should be looking at similar watches, or ones with different straps (leather?), or if i'm just overthinking it and should just get something i like but that doesn't scream cheesy / flavor-flav.

I'm in the same boat. I work in marketing so it is a little less trendy, but shoes and a well tailored suit are really important. I really like Allen Edmonds shoes since they are great quality and can be restored. My watch is a Movado...it is very versatile and dresses up and down equally well. I'm thinking of being a bit different and going for a pocket watch. I think it will complete my geek-chic image.

No one cares if you have a watch or even what kind it is. Use your cell phone like the rest of the world does in 2010. Spend the excess cash on buying drinks for classmates.

Agreed - younger people just don't wear watches anymore, don't let some "old schoolers" make you think otherwise! If you want to buy one because you want it as an accessory then that's fine, but don't think it's a necessity! Save up your money to make sure you have the latest smartphone, that's how people are going to judge you nowadays anyway...
