Solution to Q3

3. Which one of the following statements is most strongly supported by the information in the passage?

Q stem Analysis --> Same as Q1 - choose an option which MUST BE TRUE.

(A) Little or no ozone destruction occurs naturally in the stratosphere unless chlorine is present.
Incorrect. We cannot say CONCUSIVELY that chlorine MUST be present for depletion

(B) Skin cancers occur primarily because of excessive absorption of ultraviolet light.
Ok.. Passage does tell in the beginning. Let's keep this but the work PRIMARILY jumps at me. So will come back to this.

(C) Few chemicals besides CFCs can result in the release of chlorine in the upper atmosphere.
Incorrect.. We cannot tell about things outside CFC. Out of scope.

(D) Regulating the use of CFCs contributes indirectly to lowering the incidence of skin cancer.
Ok looks good.. The passage tells that regulating CFC will lead to Ozone NOT depleting which INDIRECTLY can lower skin cancer given it keeps UV lights out.

(E) The upward flow of CFCs into the stratosphere occurs mainly in Antarctica.
Incorrect. We cannot surely say it occurs ONLY in Antarctica.

Between B & D - I would reject B simply coz of the word 'primarily'

Hence D

Explanation

4. Based on the passage, the information yielded by which one of the following experiments would be most useful in determining whether a particular chemical could replace CFCs without damaging the ozone layer?

Explanation

The question is asking for a test that would determine whether a chemical could avoid the harmful effects of CFCs. The passage states that the chlorine from CFCs has a devastating effect on the ozone layer.

A. No. Reactions with other forms of oxygen wouldn’t help determine effects on the ozone layer.

B. No. Reactions with other chemicals wouldn’t help determine effects on the ozone layer.

C. No. A reaction with chlorine would not be relevant because there isn’t chlorine in the ozone layer.

D. Yes. Since chlorine has a devastating effect on the ozone layer, determining similarities with chlorine would be useful to determine whether a chemical might damage the ozone layer.

E. No. It is not the fact that CFCs break down into components that is the problem, but rather that one of the components is chlorine, which damages the ozone layer.

Answer: D

Explanation

The correct answer will be the statement best supported by evidence in the passage.

A. No. This answer choice is extreme and unsupported. The passage does not discuss whether alternative chemicals were available.

B. Yes. The passage states at the end of the fourth paragraph that the banning of CFCs has led to the development of more environmentally friendly refrigerant chemicals.

C. No. This answer choice is extreme and unsupported. The passage does not discuss the energy efficiency of CFCs.

D. No. The passage states that CFCs were banned in North America approximately a decade prior to the Montreal Protocol.

E. No. The passage only states that the banning of CFCs has led to the development of more environmentally friendly refrigerant chemicals.
