So, approximately what percent is  5/4  greater than 4/5?
Or (using decimals) approximately what percent is  1.25  greater than 0.8?

NO NEED FOR ANY CALCULATIONS 
Notice that  1.2  is 50% greater than 0.8
So,  1.25  must be  a little more than  50% greater than 0.8
Check the answer choices.....

hello shrive,

question asks by what % x is greater than 4/5. to find that you will need to calculate the value of x and then find difference between x and 4/5 (i.e subtract 4/5 from x)

It is given that (4/5)(x) = 1 -> x =5/4 . now you can calculate difference between x and 4/5. in two ways of calculating that either use lcm of denominators to get 5/4 -4/5 = 25-16/9 = 9/20. Now we know x is 9/20 more than 4/5. to calculate it in percent simply use (difference/ 4/5) *100 -> you will get (9/20/4/5) * 100. simplifying will give you 225/4 % or 56.25 % now question asks approximately so 56% should be the answer.

Or also you can use decimal form , in that case 5/4 =1.25 and 4/5 =0.8 so difference between x and 4/5 =1.25 - 0.8 = 0.45, again to calculate %. use percentage formula. The question asks by what % x is greater than 4/5 so 4/5 will be used in denominator and their difference in numerator and we multiply the product by 100 to get % so 0.45/0.8 * 100 = 56.25 ~ 56 %

I always get confused while considering the denominator.
What percent is X greater than Y? In this, denominator has to be Y...Why?

Does the Keyword -  greater than - Defines which one has to be denominator?

Yes, when we say What percent is X greater than Y or What percent is X less than Y we compare X with Y.
we calculate (x-y)/y

The denominator follows the phrase "greater than" or "less than".
