hello shrive,

question asks by what % x is greater than 4/5. to find that you will need to calculate the value of x and then find difference between x and 4/5 (i.e subtract 4/5 from x)

It is given that (4/5)(x) = 1 -> x =5/4 . now you can calculate difference between x and 4/5. in two ways of calculating that either use lcm of denominators to get 5/4 -4/5 = 25-16/9 = 9/20. Now we know x is 9/20 more than 4/5. to calculate it in percent simply use (difference/ 4/5) *100 -> you will get (9/20/4/5) * 100. simplifying will give you 225/4 % or 56.25 % now question asks approximately so 56% should be the answer.

Or also you can use decimal form , in that case 5/4 =1.25 and 4/5 =0.8 so difference between x and 4/5 =1.25 - 0.8 = 0.45, again to calculate %. use percentage formula. The question asks by what % x is greater than 4/5 so 4/5 will be used in denominator and their difference in numerator and we multiply the product by 100 to get % so 0.45/0.8 * 100 = 56.25 ~ 56 %

Brilliant AJ : i didn't know what 9/20 means.

I always get confused while considering the denominator.
What percent is X greater than Y? In this, denominator has to be Y...Why?

Does the Keyword - greater than- Defines which one has to be denominator?

Thanks in advance. Cheers!

Yes, when we say What percent is X greater than Y or What percent is X less than Y we compare X with Y.
we calculate (x-y)/y

The denominator follows the phrase "greater than" or "less than".

If (4/5)(x) = 1, then x = 5/4

So, approximately what percent is 5/4 greater than 4/5?
Or (using decimals) approximately what percent is 1.25 greater than 0.8?

NO NEED FOR ANY CALCULATIONS
Notice that 1.2 is 50% greater than 0.8
So, 1.25 must be a little more than 50% greater than 0.8
Check the answer choices.....

4/5= 80%, 5/4=125% increase by 45 percentage points 45/80=56% , hence B

we can easily identify that x is 5/4
now, percent greater:
(x - 4/5)/(4/5)
5/4 - 4/5 = 9/20
divide by 4/5
we get 9/16
since it's more than 50% and only B is greater than 50%, the only possible answer can be B.

B. Key here is to know when to use the % change formula to find how many % x is greater than 4/5.

what percent is x greater than 4/5 if (4/5)(x) = 1?

=> x = 5/4
% change =[(5/4 -4/5) /(4/5) ] * 100
= (9/20 * 5/4) *100
= 56% approx

(4/5)(X) = 1 ( from the multiplicative reciprocal identity property we should know that 4/5 flipped is X)
(4/5)(5/4) = 1
x= 5/4

Now, let "y" equal the percentage increase

4/5 (Y) = 5/4 ( Y must be a number greater than 1- so if answer is in the form of a decimal such as "1.2" by the rules of percentage increase 20% would be our answer; alternatively, if we work with a number with a fraction and have a number such a "1 3/5: then the percentage increase would be 60%)

Y = (5/4) / (4/5) -- we can flip the fraction in the denominator and multiply it by the numerator in the next step
Y= (5/4)(5/4)
Y = 25/16 (lets turn this into a mixed number)
Y = 1 9/16

Now we know that our percentage increase is 9/16
a percentage. here's why

9/16= 56%

Hence "B"

The problem is better dealt with decimals
4/5= 0.8
5/4= 1.25

=1.25/0.8 =1.56%

Hence, 1.25 is 56% more than 0.8
Option B is correct
