Got my admissions packet today. Unfortunately no scholarships. I was hoping for some as I got in on the first round. I guess it doesnt always help. But still keen on attending Darden!

Does anyone know the % of students who get scholarships?

I received my admission packet yesterday and I didn't get any scholarship as well.

According to Darden's website, statistically speaking about 25% of the matriculating students got some form of scholarship. The site does not indicate how many percent of the admitted students got scholarship though.

When you say international, do you mean the people without the US citizenship?

My wife and I just got our Darden letters. She got full tution and I got 1/3rd! Why wouldn't they mention that on the admissions phone call?????

Congrats on the scholarship! That's incredible. Now, feel free if this is too personal, but what do you think you guys did right that you were able to secure the scholarships from so many places? I thought I had a pretty strong profile and I was admitted to all the places I applied but none of them were willing to give me a scholarship. FWIW, I come from IB and made pretty good money, but I see you're from IB too. I stayed in finance instead of going to the public sector, but all our other profiles are very much similar. Everyone says it's completely merit based which kinda hurts my pride a little.

I couldn't really tell you exactly what we did "right". I think that my mix of IB and non-profit is somewhat unique. My wife is in IB but focuses in emerging markets. She's a dual citizen w/ lots of international experience and language skills. Those factors may have made a difference. Other than that we visited the schools, focused on the GMAT, and wrote essays like everyone else.

Thanks for the reply. I'm very similar in that respect too with regards to international experience. Though I'm from Asia and I guess we're quite a major minority in business schools.

I think the breakdown is a third of the students receive scholarships, half of scholarship recipients gets 1/2 tuition. However, they won't release the funds to other students once an admitted student who had a scholarship turns down the offer.

That almost doesnt seem fair! Is there any way that they might reconsider you for a scholarship?

Are there any of you which might consider not going to the school in case of no scholarships?

In a way, business schools are like businesses. They're trying to lure you to their school by offering you scholarship money. Most of these top b-schools know that if you're applying to their school, you're most likely applying to several other top b-schools. With that said, they're really trying to gauge at where you may stand and offer you some financial incentives, and hopefully good enough of a financial incentives so that you won't turn them away. I do not think Darden will reconsider its scholarship without some other pulls. I once read that the dean of Stanford GSB said that if you're accepted to GSB, but also accepted to another program with money, you're definitely welcome to share that sentiment with Stanford and Stanford will re-evaluate your opportunity of getting scholarship.

You can always ask them to reconsider, but you have to give them a reason, i.e. you have a scholarship in hand from another school (and be prepared to show the evidence b/c they will ask). All these schools are good enough for my future goals, I will go to one that will give me the least financial burden. To bakfed's point, it is a business, if they know you're able to pay the full tuition, they will not offer you anything. Why should the school decrease their revenues if they don't have to. Don't get me wrong, while I'm very gun-ho about trying to get a scholarship, I'm not going to press my luck too much, even if I do turn Darden down. At some point, I have to say it's about what I can do for the school and not vice versa.

I have not received my packet yet. Talked to admissions yesterday. It seems that there had been some problems with my adress (I don't know why). However, yesterday evening I received an email from FedEx with a tracking number. I shouldn't expect the packet before the beginning of next week (I'm from Scandinavia).

it seems this year's Darden class will be very interesting. I just put my app for rd2 and am excited about Darden. Just wondering when to expect interview invites.

I think Darden is extremely well-equipped at putting interesting people in the class. Darden only takes about 300 to 330 students, and I'm quite impressed with the end result of the students. While I was on campus interviewing, the caliber of the students can easily be noticed by the way students speak and interact with others. You can easily tell if someone sticks out like a sore thumb if you're not well-fitted, and to see that the student body from Darden is so fundamentally well-designed by the AdCom is really quite impressive. I can't wait to meet those who I'm going to be classmates with for the next two years.

I wouldn't start thinking about until at least 3 or 4 weeks down the application deadline. So a rough estimate would be around February 7th.
