Just finished my Skype interview. The usual conversation - tell me about yourself - as described in the above posts. The waiting begins now. Was told would hear by Dec 21st

Hey guys - just wanted to offer my support during this time, either for those who are waiting to hear from R1 or for those of you who are applying to R2 or R3!

I am a second year student at Darden and I'm a member of the Student Admissions Committee (which means I conduct interviews, chat with prospective students, etc.) Please let me know if you have any questions! Either post them here or through this link:

Hi DardenSYStudent,

I interviewed at Darden last week. It was a beautiful day in Cville. My interview consisted of both a SY and a member of the ADCOM who was "just sitting in." Is this because maybe the interviewer was new or maybe they wanted two sets of eyes to evaluate me? I received my invite relatively late (around Thanksgiving) so I'm guessing that my application probably went to a Committee as the student reader and ADCOM reader may have had different opinions on whether I should be invited. I might be reading into this too much, but can you shed any light on this?

Thanks,
Gryphon

Hi Gryphon,

Don't read anything into having both a student interviewer and an admissions officer at your interview. I want to validate two facts:

1) All interviews are blind. Neither individual at your interview has seen your application or resume at all, as all interviews at Darden are blind. Therefore they would not have any opportunity to form an opinion about your candidacy prior to the interview.

2) All Student Admissions Committee members will conduct a few interviews with an admissions officer present. We were all trained to do interviews this year, and it is par for the course that a few interviews with have admissions officers present for OUR benefit. These are randomly assigned to candidates, so having two people at your interview, again, is no reflection of your candidacy.

Hope that helps! Glad you had a good visit to Darden, and good luck with the process!

Hi DardenSYStudent,

I applied in R1 and haven't yet received any interview invite. The school says that they send invites all the way upto the decision deadline, but how do we interpret that? Is it something that they wait if anybody from the first batch (the cream of the crop) invited for interview screws up and then send the new invitations accordingly to the next best candidates or they really do the application reading till the last moment of decision deadline? At least on this forum, the invites have dried up, so I get a feeling that most likely I will be rejected. Does the school offer any feedback if you want to reapply next year, so that you know where you can improve on your application next year?

Thanks

Hi There -

To your first question, when you receive your interview invitation has no bearing on the strength of your candidacy. Interview invites are sent in a random order because applications are read in a random order. I can confirm that interview invites will be extended up until 12/21 and that folks will be coming in to interview up until that date.

On your second question, I believe Darden does historically provide feedback during the summer leading up to the next application cycle. We do encourage re-applicants, so if for some reason it doesn't work out this year, we can give you targeted feedback on how to improve your candidacy for the next application season.

Hope that helps - best of luck!

Hi DardenSYStudent,

Thanks for taking time out of your exam prep to answer the questions. Just one more question:
Is the application at Darden read by a student only or read twice once by student and then by adcom staff member?
I understand the apps are read randomly, but are they picked up for review in the order in which they are received? So an app submitted at 11:30pm on the deadline date will be lower in the pile and possibly be read later?

Sorry to bother you, but getting nervous at not getting an invite for interview so far.

Thanks.

I understand the anxiety. All applications are read by admissions officers (not students) in random order, and doesn't reflect when they were received.

Thanks!

Does Darden call all applicants? Or do we have to check our application status, or will we receive an email with the decision? Anyone know?

Thanks!

Hi jsundare - Darden will send out an email to all applicants informing them of admissions decisions. Admissions officers at Darden may try to give you a call as well, but there is no set policy/guarantee of this. Best policy is to keep en eye out on your email. Good luck!

This wait is killing me.
Any idea as to what the success ratio for interviewed applicants is at Darden?
Is the interview a major factor for admissions or it is just another data point?

I think I posted this a while back but I can't be sure. I remember seeing on BusinessWeek's site that they had at one time posted (for last year) the number of people interviewed. So, I backed into the acceptance rate for people who interviewed and it was somewhere between 65-70%. This was confirmed to me by a friend on the Student Admissions Committee. Unfortunately, BusinessWeek has since removed the necessary data point to be able to back into this number.

Obviously, take this with a grain of salt (as I am doing) 'cause we all know that at a certain point, in the end, this whole process teeters on the brink of being a crap shoot.

Wait is also killing me. At least I have the anxiety of awaiting my Tuck decision today/tomorrow to take my mind off of the anxiety from my impending Darden decision... (Something tells me this is not healthy.)

Good luck to everyone over the next several days.

Thanks for the response. 65-70% should be good but am not sure how old the business week data was.
However, good luck for your Tuck decision and good luck to all of us for 21st :).

Wow, this is much less stressful for the applicant than leaking out a few acceptances every day for a couple weeks in no particular order.
