IIT topper (got president medal or governor prize for highest GPA/ outstanding EC)
went to Mckinsey for 2 yrs
switched to PE such as Blackstone etc and worked for 2 yrs

These ppl are considered extraordinary inside IIT... As an avg IITian I didnt expect interviews but I thot someway somehow my essays would convince adcom but it seems like the end (of my HBS dream)is near with 3 days to go

@vicksikand- I know somehow who applied R2 with 90%+ GMAT, non-IIT pedigree Male engineer & who has achieved a lot professionally- Stud @ work, Changing the industry through his work. AFAIK, no invite yet.
According to current student @ HBS, out of 25 2nd yr students, 22 come from IIT and the rest non-IIT - Maybe somebody can confirm this?

As Sandy/HBS Guru said in an old post, essays don't matter that much- you have to fit into certain check boxes....
IIT folks are awesome - Other are equally good too.

Don't loose hope guys n gals- Feb 16th is next week :)

Your friend may have done out of the world stuff at work, but if he can't tell his story, it's no good. Again, I dont necessarily agree with the 22/25 number, but then who knows it might be true !

I guess same goes for a topper from any non-IIT. One of my classmates from a top non-IIT school applied and got in, but then he was a topper throughout. Another case was of a non-IIT'ian from GE(US).....I am sure there are others. However, to your point it is quite possible HBS gives a lot of importance to pedigree.

IIT stands for Indian Institutes of Technology. These are uber competitive institutes which produce the creme de la creme of Indian engineers.

Now given the fact, that HBS almost always prefers Indians from IITs (the men for sure), am not sure how they justify their stand on diversity. Infact, their definition of diversity and merit above all comes across to me as highly restricted with a very narrow scope. I have been following the class profiles of HBS for the past 3 years and have never come across an Indian guy who is not from IIT. While HBS ensures that a certain % of it's batch every year represents India, the color and flavor of this segment seems almost seems predetrmined. Which makes me assume that HBS likes to play it safe. Select the people who appear 'safest' and most probable to succeed. *Sigh* so much so for an enligntened world

While I'm not Indian, I know more than my fair share of Indians. I don't think people realize how elite IIT really is. They accept only a few thousand people per year - think about that in terms of the population of India. That is really saying something.

The few people that I've met from IIT are literally the smartest people I know. And while many study engineering - that's because it's almost a requirement for young male Indians. Many of them have passions that lie far beyond engineering - so it's hard to stereotype them based on their degree.

I think even though IIT is useful to have ..in my case I think it worked against me in my HBS app.... bcos of my IIT background I would have been compared with the IIT topper - mckinsey - gmat 750+ guy and i would have lost that battle... on the other hand if i had not gone to IIT but say did extremely well in a non- engineering field I would have had a better chance

Anyway no use crying now

Would love to see those stats. One of my co-workers, an IITian, said the same thing, but did not have any data to substantiate his claim. Anyhow....good luck all !
