Would anyone happen to know if one can pursue language classes while attending HBS? I've been learning Mandarin for two years now and would like to continue to do so, albeit in a formal setting. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any information regarding this...

Don't think so. Maybe through cross-registration (but you can cross-register only during EC).

folks,

For HBS essay 1 (3 substantial accomplishments and why), what is a recommeded strategy for word limit for individual elements (what and why) within an accomplishment. Does it make sense to have 150 words for what the accomplishment is and 50 for why one views it as such?
What did folks who got in last year do?

much appreciated.

Thanks

My split was more like 60/40% per accomplishment

The HBS career vision essay:What is your career vision and why is it important to you?.Couple of questions:

1) How much space should be devoted to "how" I am going to get there--Short term goals etc.
2) If not here, then where can I address the "How HBS is going to help me get there"?The only other essay topic that I could think of was the Cover Letter Topic.

1) How much space should be devoted to "how" I am going to get there--Short term goals etc.

I had 2 sentences for short-term (what = 1 sentence and why = 1 sentence), 1 sentence for mid-term (just what) and a paragraph on long-term (what and why). Overall, I focused on what I want and why and kind of "ignored" how.

I didn't address it at all (HBS doesn't ask, I don't answer). Look into Sandy's site and posts - he discussed it at some point and advised that it's not needed to address why HBS.

To all HBS hopefuls and dreamers... My best advice is: don't let anybody tell you that you have or you don't have a shot at HBS. As long as you've stats in the ballpark (GMAT +/-700, reasonable GPA) try. It's about how you present yourself and all the talk that "too old", "too young", "too much work experience", "too little work experience", etc. is - in my opinion - useless. The only way you know is by trying.

inspiring. thanks garbus222

Is there no longer an optional essay available? Is it the additional information section (500 characters)?

HBS stated in the admissions page that they discourage TOEFL scores below 109, that is a lot...we are talking a score above 90% of the total score.

Are they flexible on this or in case I score less I should consider retaking TOEFL? I am concerned because that score is a big stretch and it is well above the minimum of other top schools (Stanford asks for 100)

I understand that their higher bar might be due to the nature of the case method, but nevertheless I find it stupid having to retake toefl for a couple points.

Any clue on how admissions sees the toefl score and how flexible they are?

Question:

Can the additional information section (500 words) be used for an additional essay ? I've heard that people use it to allay any concerns about their candidacy but can it be used otherwise as well ?
I ask this question because
a) the word limits on essay questions are very stringent and necessitate that you leave out big chunks of your life/accomplishments/etc
b) Stanford additional information section categorically states not to include essays.

Since there is no such restriction by HBS, I wonder...

I really have no idea where to include the "optional essay". FYI, I believe it's 500 characters, not 500 words... ouch.

A few notable comments from Dee during last night's "Business School Admissions Panel" event in DC:

- Out of approximately 9100 applications, HBS will interview 1800 "finalists". Your interviewer will have read EVERYTHING from your app, and your interview will be a 30-minute conversation where their goal is to determine whether or not they would like you to be their section-mate (if they were a student).

- "Let go of the burning desire to stand out ... many of our applicants have done ordinary things really well ..."
- (on essays) "Your blink response is the right answer ... you just need to EXECUTE".
