rjacobs..did u get a chance to visit? I'm thinking of applying here..great location, decent undergrad reputation as well.
were you impressed with UCSD overall?
I need perspectives here..since this is a new program. Potential to break to top 20?

Just my two cents...

I have a friend who attended UCSD for MBA (full scholarship), Berkeley undergrad for computer science. Currently working at Autodesk in the bay area.

I think in California, UCSD has a pretty good overall reputation. But I dont think the name yet carries nationally.

Hi cul3s,

I will be visiting UCSD at the end of next week - I'll try and post about my trip thereafter. I have spoken with some of the UCSD Admissions people, as well as some people at companies involved with MBA students there - I've heard nothing but glowing reports. UCSD is a collaborative school - think Kellogg-style - and they have a unique hands-on second-year program which follows an idea from development to production - "Lab to Market."

Let's be realistic though, it's not an elite school, and I don't think it will be any time soon. I'd put it maybe in the 20-30 range, comparable to maybe UW or ASU in terms of rankings. It's too new for a lot of well-established financial firms to be all that interested. So, if that's your thing, UCSD is probably not the school for you. I, however, am interested in Arts, Nonprofit, and Entrepreneurship, so the recruiting thing isn't as big a drawback for me (though it is a consideration). I'm also heavily influenced by location, as I did my undergrad at UCSD and loved it down there. San Diego is also a much bigger metro area than most people realize, at about 3 million, and since UCSD will probably become the premier business school in San Diego, it's worth a look if you're interested in local gigs.

Also, since I noticed you asking about gyms in another thread, UCSD's gym (RIMAC) is absolutely top-notch and pretty new. Plus, because there are no Div-I athletes taking over the gym, it's also easy to access/use the equipment. At least when I was an undergrad, UCSD did a good job of trying to keep students healthy w/lots of intramurals, frisbees everywhere, etc.

rjacobs, are you going to be attending the full-time mba preview day on Jan 17th?
I am thinking of going too depending on certain issues. Maybe I'll see ya there.

As for the Rady program I heard they expect it to enter the rankings 3-4 years from now and hope for top 20 or thereabout.

wow nice info there..and I'm looking forward to your trip report too.
I'm probably more of a consulting guy (it's what I do right now), but I'm thinking of general mgt as well.
Yea I like the location a lot; I live and work in SD for almost a year and I think it's a wonderful place to be.
Let me know if you decide to enroll...50k scholarship is quite an incentive too.

So I went to Preview Day at Rady on Saturday. It was impressive, and I don't think I'm all that easily impressed. I met chineseburned, the author of that AWA guide on this site which everyone should read...he has an interview soon with Rady! Saw my old undergrad campus, which has undergone massive construction since I left (for the better, I think). Asked an AdCom and asked for an extension of my decision deadline, and they gave me two extra weeks (so I can hear from Stanford). Anyway, I wrote the complete rundown on my blog, which reads as follows (just copied and pasted to make it easier):

Quote:
I just got back from four days in San Diego, where I spent some time on the UCSD campus and attended Preview Day at the Rady School of Management. Maybe the defining moment of my trip came at noon on Friday, as I was laying on the beach in 80-degree heat protected by a layer of SPF-30 sunscreen in the middle of January and thinking to myself, “a fellowship to UCSD is going to be hard to turn down.”

I’ll briefly share my impression of Rady. Everything is impeccably planned. The building is brand-spanking new, and there will be a second building breaking ground next year. Because of the unique architecture, most of the rooms where students spend time have an ocean view. The building has changing rooms for men and women in case you have an interview or want to use the gym after class. The administration and faculty have been poached from an impressive list of top-notch business schools. They are dead serious about their intention to compete with Berkeley and UCLA, and being around the people there gives you get the distinct sense that such competition is possible.

Then there’s the odd criticism of UCSD that so far, it’s just a local school. This is somewhat true; although the administration is taking strides to attract interest from national firms, the UCSD brand is relatively unrecognized outside of Southern California. If I were to attend UCSD, I’d probably want to look for work within San Diego upon graduation. But is that really a negative? Don’t forget about the SPF-30 in mid-January. Then consider that one of my alternatives is Dartmouth. The local school in San Diego starts to look a little better. Also consider that the San Diego metro area has a population of 3 million, with Los Angeles just up the road. The air is clean, the city is easy to negotiate, the food is great. The quality of life in San Diego, in my admittedly biased opinion, is unbeatable.

There are, of course, downsides. UCSD spends a lot of time telling people they are a “top business school” (they use the whole phrase as often as possible), when in reality they are not - demonstrably not. UCSD is too new to appear in any rankings, and I’d be surprised if they break #20 when BusinessWeek et al. finally recognize them. This is mitigated somewhat by the fact that they are clearly aware that they need to make a strong initial showing in the rankings, and have become a fundraising powerhouse in an effort to do so. But UCSD also just doesn’t quite have the intellectual capital of a place like Haas, either in the faculty or the student body. The difference you find in the top 10 business schools is not only interest from recruiters, but it’s also the opportunity to meet that kid who started a multi-million dollar social networking website, or the guy that developed a new methodology for portfolio management at Goldman Sachs, or the professor that foresaw the subprime housing crisis five years in advance. All the UCSD students I met were impressively bright and a pretty affable bunch, but I doubt you’d hear too many of those real head-turning stories from them.

However, there is one thing I noticed about the Rady students that really convinced me that it would be a worthwhile place to spend two years. For them, entrepreneurship isn’t something that you study: it’s a way of life. For all UCLA’s talk about it being a great place for learning how to start a company, UCLA doesn’t hold a candle to UCSD in terms of students’ willingness to build things from the ground up. I talked to one student who told me flat-out that that’s why she came to Rady; she had started her own nonprofit company in Seattle, and wanted to have that same atmosphere at business school. The Rady students are all vehement about building the school’s reputation, but in doing so they feel they are gaining valuable experience that will guide them in their careers afterward. And I think they have a very good point.

It was great meeting you Rjacobs!
Good to hear they gave you a 2-week extension...very nice people. Both the Adcom and students by the way. I felt pretty much at home during that info session. I feel a lot less nervous going into the interview now. Let's see what happens.

BTW, only in Dec and Jan can you get away with SPF as low as 30 around here :-D

Had my interview this week. I think it went pretty good with the exception of 5min of it where I just couldn't come up with anything intelligent to say to one of the questions....Oh well, it's hard to stay focused for a full hour and have a story for everything that might be thrown at you. I hope this doesn't hurt me too much. Can't wait for the decision.

Haha, yes, that would probably be me, UCSD's #1 cheerleader. Congrats on your admit CB!! Good luck with UCLA and the rest as well - keep us posted.

Thanks rjacobs!

Yes, that would be you. And there's no shame in being the #1 cheerleader as I hear they pay well for that :-D.....
Seems I'm almost following your steps

Admitted! Just saw it online a few minutes ago.

Few questions for those who were admitted:
If you received a scholarship offer were you informed online or later by mail?
Can you obtain residency in Cali for your second school year?

Hey Tadashi, congrats! I received word of my fellowship via post, three days after my online acceptance. Kind of an odd way to do it, I think, but hey, I'll take it.

I just got back from Rady Admit Day, and someone there mentioned being able to establish residency for year 2, but I'm sorry I don't have details for you since I'm a native. However, I'm sure the admissions office would be more than happy to help answer your questions.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions about Rady - I've matriculated now, and I've visited a couple times and am getting a better sense of the program.

what were you guys' deciding factor in joining ucsd besides the money...or was it just the money? hehe (especially curious about your reason chineseburned..since I see that you are admitted in USC as well).

I'm intrigued by its location....but I'm trying to gauge whether I should apply there or not for 2010.

Hey cul3s,

I'd really encourage you to visit the school. In a nutshell, here is why I applied:

I like California and I want to stay, and I also like San Diego. Rady is now the premier program in San Diego
The UCSD administration is very responsive to student input
Small class size. Some people see this as a negative, but I kind of like the idea of not having 100 consultants in my class
    Focus on entrepreneurship
I was hoping for a scholarship (and it worked out!)

When UCSD enters the rankings (hopefully soon after I graduate), its star will rise quickly, and I think it will start to be seen as a hot/alternative school. Feel free to pm me if you want to talk more!

Isn't money important? :-D
Yeah, it's one of the three main reasons for me. Because unlike 80% of the people around here I do not believe in MBA ROI, at least not in the traditional sense. For me money matters now, not 5 or 10 years from now when who knows what the economical or political situation might be. Oh, and I would never accept being in debt...just me.
Location - second to none.
School - yeah, less consultants and investment bankers is what I prefer. Plus, unlike some schools that just polish you a bit and supposedly hand you big-pay jobs on a platter, this one will not. It will actually make you work very hard for whatever it is you want to achieve. It's what you make of it in an enterpreneurish sense as it can get - you could actually be making less money than pre-mba, or (less likely) you could succeed big and thrive on your very own. As risky as it is, persuing the latter drives me.
