GL to all, and congrats to many.

I have a question regarding USC's ranking. In the US, USC is a top 20 school. In cali (SoCal), it is considered "just as good" as UCLA.

However, when you look at Financial Times (FT) global rankings, USC drops considerably, and actually ranks in the bottom 60...has anybody discovered why there is such a large discrepancy and how come as a "global" MBA, Marshall takes such a bit hit? It is a strange question, especially considering how globally focused Marshall is.

What do you guys think?

Hey folks, information for you all...

Admit Weekend is April 27-28. It is a blast (I should know, I'm helping out with the planning). Looking forward to seeing you guys on campus!

I went around and met the other GMATClub members in the incoming class last year during admit weekend - totally worth it to have a network already in place when you get there. You won't find everyone, but it definitely helps to put a face to a username.

Regarding rankings... you'll find similar opportunities at the schools especially if you're a capable/competent person (which I am assuming everyone is). To really figure out the differences in rankings you'd have to dig into their ranking methodology. It may have to do with the fact that a lot of USC MBAs start their own business so the starting salary figure is depressed. It could be that the majority of our students also go into brand management/marketing which has lower comparative salaries, thus also depressing the ranking (by choice rather than by design). There are a number of legitimate reasons why the rankings might be lower. Now if rankings included how many times USC Marshall has won case competitions over top 10 teams you'd see a marked shift... :-P

CyberC1,
Thanks for the insights. Do you think brand management & marketing is strong at Marshall comparing to other schools at the same tier? Right now I am facing the choice between Marshall and Georgetown. I know I am leaning towards Marshall but would like to collect more information before the final decision. I checked the employment report online. It only has general information but doesn't offer more details about marketing field. Would you shed more light on the marketing field? What's your viewpoint on the current career landscape for marketing field? I am a career switcher from engineering to marketing. So it's top of my concerns. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am going to attend the admit weekend and plan to stay longer than two days to look for housing/apt.
Do you think it's a good idea to start searching at this time? Would it be too early? Any advice about location?

I had to make the same decision of schools last year, so I get where you're coming from. :-)

As a disclaimer, I'm not in the marketing vertical (Consulting is where I be.. arrr).
Marketing is a strong career field at Marshall. Between the career center and the Graduate Marketing Association, students are very prepared before going into any job interview. Additionally, there are a ton of positions in marketing that are afforded to Marshall students from companies that range across industries. Based on what I see with my classmates marketing outlook seems to be good and I know several folks that have swapped their engineer hat for marketing. I'm not sure how Georgetown stacks up in marketing/brand management - I didn't think they were known for that... Might want to check with the Hoyas in the next thread over.

It's never to early for apartment searching. There'll be a session on where to live during the Admit Weekend. Most people live in Downtown LA or in Santa Monica (I recommend Santa Monica).

I think that sometimes rankings can be based on lack of knowledge. I don't know for sure why FT ranks us (I can say that now!) at that point, but if you look at the Economist rankings, USC is 14th in the US and 22nd worldwide. I think the best advice I've heard is to not focus on the rankings, but to focus on the fit for you as an individual.

Amen to that!

Congrats to everyone who has got in! We are still working on ironing out some details around this year's Admit Weekend but it looks like it is going to be an event that you don't want to miss! ;)

Fight On!

I've been pondering this as well...especially knowing that my future is far more uncertain at USC vs. some of my other options.

I am IN too!!! So excited! Just found out this morning by logging in to AY. I haven't got the call though. I am actually thinking of renting out this place near USC. It has 4 bedroom and 2 baths. My coworker's friend owns this place but he is relocating to New York for a new job and wants to rent his place out. So if anyone is interested in finding a place to live, please let me know.

Cheers and good luck to the rest that are still waiting for the good news.

Again to follow up with my previous post. I have the specific info for this place. The address is 3528 Hillcrest Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90016. It has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living areas, kitchen appliances, detached garage, free cable and internet, 1,540 sq ft. The owner wants $2,300 a month, so if there are 4 people, that would be $575 each. You can google map the place, it's relatively close by to USC, less than 4 miles, can either drive there or even bike there. Let me know if anyone is interested. So far I have one person that expressed his interest. Hope to see all you guys there at the Admit weekend!

I am going for the experience. As a single male, looking for mobility, I don't think you can place a price on quality education and an opportunity to start over. If I had a family, or was already massively in debt, then things might be different!

Well, my friend says the area is pretty safe. Once you get past a certain perimeter, it's pretty ghetto. I am planning to take a look at the place next week. If you are interested in coming along and see, pm me. I'll give you my contact info.
