Hello there - I'm a long time lurker, and had a bit of an odd question. I had success in getting an interview from Wharton despite a non-Ivy & non-consulting background, but will probably go to another school. If I were interested in selling the complete set of my Wharton essays, is this "frowned upon"? My intention isn't to antagonize anyone on this thread. I'm simply asking if there is a market for these things...

Is there a market for individual "used" essays that the adcom has already seen? I doubt it.

At the beginning of the application process I bought a couple books on Amazon (for less than $20) about writing MBA essays. Those books contained examples of successful essays from all sorts of applicants. So maybe yes, if you're selling the essays as an example of what worked for you. But there are so many books on the subject already, I doubt you'd get more than a couple dollars.

Is there something I'm missing here?

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head there, saritalr. TopMBA - have you even been accepted? Not sure why anyone would want to read essays that only get you halfway through the door. Furthermore, I'm guessing you think the selling point of the essays is that you're not coming from Ivy/Mgmt Consulting/High Finance, but I can assure you that your situation is not particularly unique (I, for one, am none of the above and have also interviewed. Many of the students I met on campus did not satisfy that background either).

I applaud the entrepreneurial spirit though!

Hmm - thanks for the candid response! I'm feeling a bit of a squeeze financially (mortgage-related), and was wondering what my options were in earning some extra income. I guess I'll have to start a consulting site! ha!

A quick google search turned up The Essay Exchange. You get $2 every time one of their customers (prospective students) reads your essay.

https://www.theessayexchange.com/index.p ... 6&Itemid=9

So there is a market for it. I wouldn't think it's frowned upon unless you sold it to somebody who was intending to use it for their own application.

Haha, well...I stand corrected, there is a market

So there is a market for it. I wouldn't think it's frowned upon unless you sold it to somebody who was intending to use it for their own application.

One Wharton alum started a company EssayMatch.com a few years ago, and he approached a bunch of students at Wharton for essays; the company also pitched essays at prospective candidates at MBA fairs of all sorts and by doing so they pissed off every school out there.

I personally asked the higher ups in the admissions at Wharton what they thought about it, and their reaction was "if we find out that anyone's essay has been sold and then re-used by future applicants, the original author will be kicked out of the program". They also said EssayMatch was a "bad business".

At the same time, one of my classmates got a blessing from the Adcom to collect admissions essays from my cohort and beyond and publish them in digital format as a commercial e-book. Go figure.

It is always OK to share your essays for free, though.

At the same time, plagiarism is never good so even if you sell your essays, please add a disclaimer that no part of your work is for redistribution or re-use, and proper quotation rules must be observed, and source clearly mentioned.

How much do you expect from selling your essays? I think that would not be big enough to ease your financial squeeze.

I would only read others' essays from some application books to have an idea of how to write application essays. I would not pay big money to own others' essays and modify them. Is the point of essays to differentiate yourself? That said, I think that telling my own stories is much better approach.

interesting point that the admission people said they would kick the author out, since it would be very difficult to prove who was the original author...

Its definitely nerve-wrecking but all worth it in the end!

Based on how R1 went, you may or may not receive a phone call before you get the email (more likely to get a call if you are a Lauder/HCM applicant or if you are awarded a fellowship).

Good luck!

If one applied to Lauder/HCM and doesn't get a call, does that mean deny?

No not necessarily. Wharton is not very consistent with calls

The next 36 hours are going to be brutal. I feel like it's the night before Christmas, except I have no idea whether Santa is going to stop at my house...

Good luck to everyone.

Santa's Christmas visit is easier to predict. It depends whether you have been naughty or nice. :)
