Hi Guys, I am new to this forum and applying for Berkeley R1. I just noticed from the instruction online that all the transcripts must be posted in one enveloped after I hd already had my universities post my trnascripts directly to Berkeley (I got one my master degree already). Would they hold this against me? Should I at least send an email to tell them about this? Thks.

Generally speaking, schools are ok with having the GMAT scores and official Transcripts sent directly and separately from the relevent institution (undergrad school, GMAC/Pearson, etc). The one package rule applies only to any other stuff you send yourself, like paper recs, etc. For example, if you have both recommenders send paper recs, its best to send it together. It's just to help you organize your stuff better and save hassle, they won't ding your cuz of this.

BTW, has anyone gotten an official answer from the adcom about word limits? Is it strict 250,500,1000 word limit or can we do the 10% rule? On the application instructions, it says to "follow word limits". One one of the Q&A at the Haas forums, it says the word limits are "guidelines".

I sent off a few emails to the HSAs, adcom, and Haas students asking about the word limit and will let you know what they say. IF anyone else also got an answer, could they post it here?

Some updates. Most Haas students I asked went over by less than 10% on only a couple of the essays. The adcom directly said that they don't care if you're 5-10 words over, but they look for students who *consistently* and *very obviously* go over the limit on many of their essays. I'll probably shave off 10 words from my three short answers tonight, but won't bother with the 30 words over on my 1000 word essay, since that's very hard to detect.

How did you guys make your short essay that asks about what you have done to learn about Haas not sound lame? I don't know I tried to talk about my visit and info session I attended and specific conversations I had with students, but still don't feel it's coming across all that genuine. Any thoughts?

for my case, since i live in Thailand and did not have a chance to actually visit the school, I tend to focus on the conversations I got with 3 of my friends who are Hass alum. Before this, I thought this one should be one of the strongest essays I have done so far. Now I am starting to worry. :(

I am less than 10 words over on every essay except my leadership one, where I am 24 over. I think I am pretty good on word length.

bherronp, you are a-ok! I'm 35 words over the 1000 word essay, but no one's going to notice a 3.5% exceedance.

I'm just trying to be only over 15 words for the 250 word essays. The other ones are all under.

As for how to make the short answer #4 sound exciting, add passion into it. My original one sounded like a description of a root canal (thanks to rhyme for that vivid description). Talk about why a certain conversation, class visit, or experience at Haas makes you WANT to go/apply there. If you do that, your genuine interest should show through.
