Well, no one is actually using overhead sheets. Professors are projecting stuff from their tablets, so they're able both to show dynamic content and to write on the "board". That's why I was asking if those technologies actually add any functionality on top of that.

For argument's sake, let's assume it adds zero value to the classroom setting. The fact that 10 year old technology is available for use is my point. I have seen more recent technology offered at various other institutions. The fact remains that it turns certain people off. The same people who have quality of profs, job potential, etc as key factors in their decision making process.

It doesn't need defending. To each his/her own...

Right you are, perceptions do differ. For me, it's actually a good sign that the school doesn't spend money on non-value-adding gadgets. But I totally agree that people might be turned off by oldish ugly technology.

hey peeps,

been a long time........but good to be back.

had my interview with a Haas faculty in India on Saturday......very chilled out usual conversation style interview. Dont think I maxed it, but dont even think I bummed it all in all.

My 2 cents on the tech/infra in the different schools i visited

1. HBS
2. U-Chic
3. Wharton
4. Berk
5. Tuck
6. MIT
7. Stan

Kindof ironic - the three big name "tech" schools - MIT/Stan/Berk - all come lower down in my ranking

Well, for Haas the reason is being part of UC with its humongous outdated infrastructure and policies made of concrete.

ahh, ok, thanks for the clarification!

braindancer: yeah... i hope this "detachment" from UC (of all professional schools) will help Haas and Anderson get better facilities soon!

There really doesn't seem to be much room for Haas to expand...

well, there were plans (as I mentioned before) to take out the Boalt Hall parking lot between Haas and Boalt and build a new joint building... that would have helped.

Just returned from SS and my first trip to Berkeley, CA. I had a great time. The students/adcom were great. The day went along very smoothly, along quite long by the end of the process. It was excellent to see how many student ambassadors were taking ownership of the entire process. From the panels to the tour, kudos to all involved. No real negatives to speak of. You could say that the facilities could use a face lift, but that's a relatively minor point. I would expect that this will be addressed in the near future, hopefully while the c/o '10 has matriculated.

My interviewer GRILLED me like I have never been interrogated before. I don't think she was satisfied with a number of my answers as she probed deeper and deeper, sometimes spending 5+ minutes on a minor topic. It probably wasn't nearly as harsh as it could have been, but relative to my other interviews, it was certainly not a walk in the park. Obviously I don't think she intended it to be rude, but I'm guessing maybe she didn't wake up on the right side of the bed? :-D

SkiC! Glad to hear you had a great time at SS! I must say, I have been EXTREMELY impressed by every event Haas has put together so far, from infosessions to SS.

Interesting how the interviewer grilled you. I guess I could see them probing very deep. I had such a good experience with my interviewer that I didn't mind him asking me deeper questions... but it's probably because the styles are different. Either way, I think you probably did a great job and good luck with getting that phone call from Pete in a week or two!!!

i'm guessing they're crazy busy making decisions at the moment. I would probably wait until next Monday, after they make all the admit calls for R2.

sorry to hear about the dings and W/L's! :(

Ross is a great school skaballet, so you'll do great there!

For W/L, Berkeley is famous for moving a lot of people off the W/L (for yield control, since it's such a small school), so just follow up with a letter of intent that you really want to go to Haas, and then schedule the interview and you should have a good chance (50-50) to get off the list at the next decision point (R3 decisions).

Good luck!!!
