I just got back my official score report and scored a 6.0 on the writing section compared to 640 overall (I was hoping for 650+).
The schools I'm looking at all have an average score of around 650. Does getting a 6.0 help? Obviously it doesn't hurt but will schools even look at it or just gloss over it quickly?

If your school's average is 650 ( that is, a half of the admitted students scored less than that ), you are pretty much in the range. The AWA score is almost never used in the admission process.
