/x+2/ = 4 ie: square both sides x^2+4x-12 = 0
(x+6)(x-2) = 0 ie x is either -6 or 2
from 1
x^2 not = 4 thus x is impossible to = -2 or 2......thus x =-6 suff...
from 2
x^2 = 36 ie x is either 6 or -6 and impossible to be 2....thus it has to be =-6..........suff

just another way to deduce this:
Given:
|x+2| = 4
when (x+2) is -ve
=> -(x+2) = 4
or x = -6
when (x+2) i s+ve
=> x +2 = 4
or x = 2
Hence x is either -6 or 2
