I've taken the official mocks 1, 2, and 3 so far and got a pretty consistent Q49 on all three. My verbal score was V35 on the first one (screwed up the time on this and had to guess the last 6 questions), and V42 on the remaining ones. For some reason, I can't seem to move past the V42 mark, regardless of how hard I study.

The pattern of wrong answers is pretty consistent across the tests as well, usually with RC and CR Hard questions accounting for 90% of the errors. This is especially concerning because after getting the first V42, I spent the whole week drilling OG Hard CR and RC questions, only to end up with the same score as the week before. A big chunk of my errors is also due to really silly mistakes (misreading the question, misinterpreting the answer choices, etc. - I'd say usually 1 or 2 verbal mistakes in each mock were due to these silly errors).

Not sure what to do anymore - any advice would be really appreciated!

P.S. My exam is scheduled in three weeks!

Hi spider12345123,

Let me tell you that the improvement to V42+ is all about identifying the core pain points not only from a conceptual standpoint but also from a methodical standpoint. Let me elaborate.

You're probably doing decently well on the easy and medium questions but when it comes to hard questions the issues start surfacing as mentioned by you as well. What it means is that the methods that you might be using are not efficient. There is a need to improve the methodology and focus on logic. Using the right methodologies and strategies to approach the Verbal questions should ideally help you to avoid the traps set by the test makers. If you do so, it is possible to improve your score to V42+ and push your overall score as well.

The right methods for SC is meaning based approach (not splits), CR is framework driven pre-thinking and RC is involving yourself in understand why the various parts of the passage is written and not just what is written. You may find the following videos helpful:

In short, if you work slowly on your approach and focus on learning from each question you should see a significant improvement in your score.

If you are struggling with some specific topics, you may share the same for better understanding and I can help you out with your worries.

Meanwhile, you can check how Hardik scored an impressive V44 while working full-time:

It sounds as if your main move at this point is to learn not to make silly mistakes.

In order to do so, you should do accuracy focused practice. In other words, you should practice without a timer and focus almost entirely on accuracy, seeking to achieve streaks of 20 or more verbal questions correct in a row no matter how long you have to spend on each question. Stick with each question until you're sure of the correct answer. Get in the mode of getting the questions correct all the time.

Hi spider12345123,

You've received some really good responses already, but if I were you, I'd try not to focus on any one section or question format at this stage. A stable V42 is excellent, and I wouldn't want to make too many changes just before the test. That said, that's what I normally recommend during the last 1-2 weeks, but you have more time than that.
