Hello fellow MBA applicants,

I had a general question on competency at the top 15 US schools. I've been living, studying and working in Canada since the age of 17 (did my undergrad in Toronto and Masters in London, UK). My Canadian citizenship is in process (by the time I enroll I may already have it). However currently (at the time of applications) I have an Indian passport. What pool would I belong in for consideration for admission? Any general feedback would be appreciated. I have a 710 GMAT, 28 year old female (STEM Undergrad & Masters), 3.5 GPA 5 years of work experience.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Skas07,

I believe you will be considered an Indian applicant for the purposes of your application. I run an MBA Admissions Consulting firm that works with a lot of Indian applicants so this has come up before.

Hi SKas07,

Even if you’ve an Indian passport, your professional and personal experiences would be different from someone who has worked in India. You’re working in a different market with different rules & regulations, and serving different customers. These experiences make you different, which can’t be wished away with a stamp on a paper. These things will be visible to anyone reading your application, and hence your case won’t be pigeonholed into a particular bracket. And it’s fine to mention your citizenship status (what stage it is in, especially if it’s not distant) in the optional essay to bring clarity.
