Cancel retake GMAT score after invited for interview [#permalink]

Hi folks,

I already received interview invitations from Boston College and Northeastern U. Scheduled them both for next week.

Heres the dilemma. At first i was confident to score 700 for another attempt, so I input my GMAT retake date onto the applications (remarked the date in Boston College’s optional essay + input into a query box in Northeastern’s online application form). Just retook GMAT today and scored well below expected - 580 - my previous score that i submitted with the applications was 650.

Should I cancel my score? What shall I tell the adcom during interview if they ask for the follow up score?

Thanks

I would definitely cancel the score and start preparing for a retake. If they bring it up tell them you had to reschedule the test date and provide the new date

Hi merdmerd,

Yes, you must definitely cancel the score. Please only bring up the issue if the Adcom asks you regarding the retake. You could mention that you were unable to take the test on the said date due to an emergency and that you will be taking it soon. Schedule your test for another date in the meantime.

All the best for your next attempt!

Hey merdmerd
Thanks for posting! OK, interesting question. I actually don't think you need to cancel the score, assuming this is your 2nd attempt. It at least says you tried! Schools like to see that at least you tried. And if they ask in the interview, just be honest. Just say, "You know, I tried again but unfortunately, I wasn't able to improve my score." This happens all the time. Now if you've already taken the exam four times, sure...go ahead and cancel. And if you feel like you have it in you to take it again, go ahead and schedule another date.
It can be helpful to make an option tree in these sorts of situations. If you do the interview and don't get in, will you always wonder if you should have tried the GMAT again? If so...sign up for a 3rd attempt. (And get a private tutor!)
Hope that helps!
Krista
