I'm having a tough time deciding when to capitalize functions/departments in my essays. Right now, I'm taking the approach to only capitalize a department if I reference it directly such as "I presented to Human Resources" or "Finance and Operations agreed". However, if I refer to them as the "marketing team", "finance department", or "sales executives" I do not capitalize the function. Also, when I refererence a career in marketing, I do not capitalize it.

Does anyone know if the above is correct or if there is a proper way to approach this?

I personally don't think there is a right or a wrong way. The key is to be consistent.

Consistent where you always capitalize or don't capitalize or just always capitalize/don't in the same situations?

But what about departments...

IE:

Marketing acted quickly...
The Marketing department was full of...
The Marketing team was not...
The Marketing team members liked...
I presented to Marketing executives...

To me, only the first two seem correct while I feel the last 3 should be lower-case because they are more descriptive in nature. But should I capitalize all examples? I have one essay that references multiple departments which would require capitalization in a majority of the sentences.
