I would like to get opinions from everybody on my contemplation of a career change in my 40's. Since I'm planning to switch fields, I would like to do a full time MBA.
Summary:- 15 years of engine research experience - engine development is slowly being phased out - is this a good enough MBA story?
The long version :-
I'm 41 now. I have been working in Automotive engine development since finishing my Bachelors from a NIT with an aggregate percentage of 67%. I wanted to work in the automotive industry after my graduation. I was able to find a job in engine development of an Indian OEM. The work involved technical assistance with European consultants and a lot of international exposure. I was pretty successful in my career and was promoted twice during my 5 year stint in the Indian OEM. They even sponsored my masters in the US in mechanical engineering (full time).
After my masters, I was able to get a full time job in the American automotive industry. I spent 10 years in engine research and development, working with 2 different auto companies.
I have a pretty successful career in engine research , development and calibration. I have a few patents. I've published a paper. I'm on the peer review board for society of automotive engineers publications on combustion. Some of our projects are supported by the US department of energy and one of the project which I worked on was actually mentioned by president Obama as part of his clean energy initiatives. Currently my role is as a specialist as part of my achievements in various projects.
However, the recent developments on alternative propulsion has reduced the demand for development on internal combustion (IC) engines. I do notice that the funding available for IC engine projects have drastically come down across various automotive companies in recent years. For example Mercedes is going to stop all development on new engines within the next 10 years. GM is looking forward to an electrified future. Everybody knows about Tesla.
It looks like the major investment in new projects is going towards autonomous driving and electrification of vehicles. My technical skill set is not compatible with both of these fields. It appears that to continue working in automotive powertrain, I will have to redo my skill set with electric motors and image procession systems and start again from entry level jobs.
This is what made me think of an MBA. Most of my projects are complex and they involve a lot of technology demonstration and technology transfer. I have a good understanding of getting customer requirements, converting that to technology factors, assessing risky technology and selling the technological innovations to functions which could use the innovations. Comparing this background with similar profiles, the jobs which came up are consultants / project managers. But most of those jobs need an MBA.
This is why I'm thinking of a full time MBA. Is this a compelling enough story which I would sell to a Top 15 MBA school? Let me know your thoughts. I'm a US citizen now, so visa issues do not apply for me.
