TargetKellogg2024
Hello experts!
For the past couple of weeks, I have been brainstorming my post-MBA goals. Though Consulting and Tech seem very reasonable to me (an Indian IT Male with 6 years of experience in Tech), I am developing an interest in Finance. This is probably because a large part of my work so far has been related to the tech side of Finance (I work in Data & Analytics, so even though I do not work on Financial analysis, I have worked a lot on Finance-related projects) and subconsciously Finance has always been there. However, while researching, I read about Investment Banking, Portfolio Management, Venture Capital, Private Equity and more. All these things intrigued me to the extent that I am seriously considering a career in Finance post my MBA.
My question - How easy is it for a person with no previous experience in Finance to pivot to Finance using just the MBA? I do not have CFA or FRM either. Furthermore, what colleges should I target for Finance? My current GMAT score is 710 and I am retaking the exam with an aim to score at least 730.
Any suggestions and advice will be highly appreciated.
Cheers!
TargetKellogg2024 Hi hope you are doing well
It can be challenging to pivot into Finance after six years without formal education or background. But breaking down your goals into smaller steps will help you create a concrete plan and build the admissions committee's confidence in your career planning.
Roles like FP&A offer a relatively feasible transition path in Finance post-MBA. Companies that allow role flexibility and startups that provide autonomy in problem-solving are more likely to offer such opportunities when you demonstrate a solid understanding of their operating model.
Switching directly to areas like Investment Banking, Portfolio Management, Venture Capital, or Private Equity after an MBA from the EU/UK or the US can be very difficult, if not impossible. If you really are passionate to make this switch, also be willing to put in time and effort which will eventually pay off. Consider doing preparatory work before applying, such as obtaining multiple relevant internships, completing reputed certified courses, and aggressively networking your way into entry-level Finance positions. This will help establish a solid foundation for your future career before pursuing an MBA.
Wishing you the best of luck, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions
