So a bit of background...
I work in capital markets (think ECM / DCM) at a bulge bracket bank (think GS/MS). I was top ranked in my team for 3 straight years (vs 20 peers).
I have recently been asked by the head of my team to lead tech initiatives for the team for a year - that is a non-front office role, but significant leadership and value add, for a year. With a guarantee of a place back in my capital markets team.
This role is meant to be a leadership type role where I would coordinate the business on one hand and the developpers on the other, to come up with solutions that work.
I was planning on applying to a top 5 MBA program (HBS, Stanford, etc) next year. By then I will be back in my capital markets role.
Do you think 1) accepting this role for a year would be positive or detrimental to my application? 2) should I apply after returning to my capital markets role, or before while I hold a leadership role? 3) any other concerns in picking this role?
Reason why I ask is that it is very unusual - first time ever such a role is created in our team and the head is keen to shape it as a I see fit. That being said I would renounce the core finance job I am currently doing for a full year to do a traditionally back-office role... Applications wise I want to make sure I don't take an unnecessary risk by accepting this.
I have 730 GMAT, top GPA, leader at university society, top 20 worldwide university (non US), some volunteering background.
Thank you!!
