Hi all,
I'm prepping for the real GMAT - aiming to take it in a month and a halfs time.
My last 2 CATs were from Kaplan Premier, taken the last 2 weekends simulating the full test (essay, timing, etc.)
720 - Q:50/V:40 (rested/no gym)
660 - Q:48/V:36 (not making excuses, but I was physically and mentally drained on this exam due to lack of sleep and a strenuous workout in the AM)
While I am not terribly concerned about the score fluctuation based on the above, it is mildly concerning.
Perhaps the 720 was me on my higher end and the 660 is me on my lower end?
I checked this with the GMAT scoring chart from GMATpill and it looks like based on the raw scores my total CAT scores should be higher than what Kaplan gave me (730 and 690?) .
I'm aiming for 720ish on the real test and am usually a good test taker.
Given my latest scores, do you think I should take the GMATprep tests?
I intend to purchase the extra tests from GMAT prep anyways, so should I switch gears and use them, or should I take some more Kaplan exams or purchase
MGMAT materials?
Score fluctuations are normal. Everyone has good and bad test days. Just make sure that when your score dips, its not because you made silly mistakes. If you know a topic, you have to get those questions correct, otherwise the GMAT algorithm will punish you. If you don't know something, that is fine, as long as you take the time to learn it after and drill it into your head.
Nobody knows the true GMAT algorithm, so any test prep company (Kaplan and GMAT Pill included) will only give you an estimate of the score. While the exams can be a good indicator of your skill and knowledge level, always remember that the actual score is not as important as the stamina building and learning experience from each exam. You have to learn from your mistakes if you want to get past 700.
In terms of GMATPrep exams, I think that they are the best and most accurate around (not a surprise since GMAC created GMATPrep). I would save all 4 of the GMATPrep exams (2 free and 2 from exam pack 1) until the end of your studies.
With that said, if you plan to take the exam in 6 weeks, I would try to do one exam per week (on the same day of the week and time as your scheduled exam). Make sure to do the full exam (AWA and IR included). Outside of the GMATPrep exams, you can continue with Kaplan,
MGMAT, or Veritas. Honestly, they all pretty much are the same at the end of the day. I used the Veritas Prep ones and liked them, while other people swear by the
MGMAT exams.
Just make sure you study a little bit every day and learn from your mistakes in each exam. That should help you get above 720.
