Consider mentioning/including what your score breakup was compared to your recent mocks. People may be able to provide some specific suggestions. The Official Mock product page mentions that the mocks share the "Same scoring algorithm as the real GMAT™ exam". Perhaps the ESR may shed some light.

I think my next mock will be official mock #5 or #6 to test my competence in easy and medium problems. I think I should take a few weeks to learn some strategies for easy/medium problems so I can solve such problems more reliably. I never really figured out whether there are certain topics I'm weak in... maybe I'll try to find a diagnostic test, or something.
Yes, your move is to get to a point of achieving higher accuracy in easy and medium questions. Missing a few medium questions and then some easy ones as well could drag your score down a LOT.

You should never even see easy question because you're getting all the medium questions correct, and getting medium questions correct is the foundation of scoring high on the test.

For some tips on how to practice to develop greater consistency, see this post.

Spent some time in Swakop and really surprised by the fog and the desert. (For a long time My wife wanted to see the skeleton coast and see the dunes). Nice town too. We enjoyed our time there.

For diagnostic, a gmat prep that you took and the next one will be pretty clear…. Hopefully 😎

"sometimes on the test, there are not enough hard questions and so you get served many medium and easy ones (just like on tests 3-6) and as the result you you have to have a very high accuracy rate on easy questions to get a high score. Otherwise, a few mistakes can take you down quite a bit."

Thank you for that. I think my next mock will be official mock #5 or #6 to test my competence in easy and medium problems. Never ventured out into the Namib much. Beautiful though. Why'd you go there?

Welp, I guess my theory that the mocks use a different algorithm is out the window... That's actually good news though: my score drop was due to variation in performance rather than a different algorithm.

Mock percentile scores:
V: 98%
Q: 65%
Actual exam:
V: 90%
Q: 27%

I think I need to try to find a diagnostic test so I can figure out where I'm missing easy quant problems. The official mock only told me this:
SC: Expert
CR, RC, PS, DS: Proficient

Nice Verbal mock performance (98%). If you get the ESR, you could get some insight into how you performed on different Quant sub-types (i.e. geometry). You can also see how much time on average you spent per quarter and the difficulty level of the questions you faced. Consider working with a study buddy who is strong on Quant as well. You could teach them Verbal in exchange.

Hi MbattaMan,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.

Wow. That’s a pretty different break up and the pretty interesting one. You definitely need to revisit Quant because something really didn’t go right on the test. Again it might’ve been just a coincidence but 27th percentile is hard to get to by accident and coincidence alone. I think your score would benefit from digging more into Quant and figuring out where the soft spots are.

Hi MbattaMan,

To start, since you are interested in some highly-competitive Schools, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile and plans. Those Experts should be able to answer your Admissions questions and help define the specific areas of your profile that could use some improvement (and the more time that you have to implement those suggestions, the better). There's a Forum full of those Experts here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admissio ... tants-124/

I've also sent you a PM with some additional notes and questions.
