Profile Signature Update

Dear GMAT Club Members,

I would like to inform you about upcoming changes to signature rules on GMAT Club.
Starting July 1, 2023, GMAT Club will discontinue profile signatures for most users. We are doing this to make GMAT Club cleaner and less distracting. I hope this change will not cause too much inconvenience. We do have some exceptions/options for some users to continue maintaining signatures. (please see below)


Why are we making this change?
We are committed to maintaining focused and well-organized conversations on GMAT Club. While the majority of our users do not have signatures, some prolific posters have disruptive signatures that appear in every one of their posts. In some cases, their signatures are longer than their actual contributions. Additionally, many users with signatures use them primarily for commercial purposes, promoting their services in a visually distracting manner that does not align with GMAT Club's community goals.


When will the change take effect?
The new signature rules will be implemented on Thursday, July 1, 2023.


What action should you take?
If you are a member and have earned over 100 Kudos, we recommend removing any external links from your signature to ensure it will not be deleted. Otherwise, no action is necessary on your part, and the changes will take effect on July 1, 2023.


Users who can continue using signatures after July 1, 2023
    1. Distinguished GMAT Club members with 100 kudos can continue to use desktop signatures, provided they do not include external links or images.
    2. Experts participating in the new Tutor program can have one external link in their signature as long as they don't have images.
    3. Experts whose parent companies maintain a presence on GMAT Club can include external links in their signatures, with images requiring approval.
    4. GMAT Club Administrators and moderators who need to maintain signatures for important announcements and major topic information.

When I objected to the Tutor Pro program, I was also objecting to this signature policy (which I thought you had shelved along with the Tutor program, but which I see has now been implemented). I'm sure that was also true for many of the other tutors who objected to the Tutor program. If you truly value the contributions independent tutors make to your site, as you claim to do, you'd allow tutors to post more than one link in a signature, not zero links. If you won't even allow tutors to advertise their tutoring, there isn't really any reason for tutors to post here. So I will not post any useful content here again unless you change this policy.

The justification for the policy is pretext. If you were genuinely concerned about "disruptive signatures" that are "visually distracting", this is not the policy you would implement. The most visually distracting and disruptive content on the site is posted by your sponsors. You don't seem to be doing anything about that -- your advertisers still have long lists of links or big picture ads in their signatures. This signature policy seems designed to ensure that all outgoing links from this site go to TTP or e-GMAT or whoever else is paying you money. I will not support that.

I'm not sure which tutors had the egregiously long signatures you describe, but you could have just asked them to abbreviate their signatures if visual distraction was the concern. But that's clearly not the concern.
