I really do not understand option B, if we say that the bridge was blocked between 11,000 and 18,000 years ago. How can a statement which says human who travelled to alaska did before 11,000? how is that possible if the bridge is blocked?

Charcoal from a hearth site in Colorado, 2,000 miles south of Alaska, is known to be 11,200 years old. Researchers reasoned that, since glaciers prevented human migration south from the Alaska–Siberia land bridge between 18,000 and 11,000 years ago, humans must have come to the Americas more than 18,000 years ago.

The argument above relies on which of the following assumptions?

A. The earliest controlled use of fire on the American continents occurred around 11,200 years ago.

B. Any humans who came to the Americas more than 11,000 years ago came via the Alaska–Siberia land bridge.

C. The Alaska–Siberia land bridge was the result of the uptake of seawater by the continental glaciers.

D. Early human inhabitants of the Americas were hunters whose diet consisted primarily of meat, rather than gatherers who subsisted on fruit and seeds.

E. Early humans tended to migrate to warmer climates, even those who were accustomed to living in cold, harsh climates.

The confusion is in reading “more than 11,000 years ago.”

That does not mean only the blocked period between 18,000 and 11,000 years ago. It also includes times earlier than 18,000 years ago.

B says that humans who were in the Americas more than 11,000 years ago came through the Alaska–Siberia land bridge. If that was the only route, and glaciers blocked movement south from that route between 18,000 and 11,000 years ago, then humans found in Colorado 11,200 years ago must have moved south before 18,000 years ago.

So B is needed because it rules out another route into the Americas. Without B, humans could have reached Colorado by some non-land-bridge route, and the conclusion would not follow.

Hi Shrutika02,

Your confusion is completely understandable, and it comes from one small misread of what option B is actually saying. B is not claiming that anyone travelled across the bridge between 18,000 and 11,000 years ago. Read it again, slowly:

"Any humans who came to the Americas more than 11,000 years ago came via the land bridge."

This sentence says nothing about when the crossing happened. It only says: whoever did get here, the land bridge was the route they used. It rules out other routes (boat, a different land path) - it does not claim anyone crossed during the blocked window.

Why the argument needs this

The researchers' logic is: the bridge route was blocked from 18,000 to 11,000 years ago, yet humans were already in Colorado by 11,200 years ago, so they must have crossed before the block - i.e., more than 18,000 years ago. That leap only works if the land bridge was the only way in. If people could have arrived by some other route, the blockage of this one route would prove nothing about timing. That "only route" condition is exactly what B supplies.

A quick way to feel it

Suppose I argue, "The only road into town was closed all last week, but my friend is in town today - so she must have arrived before the closure." That holds only if the road was her only way in. If she could fly, the closed road tells us nothing. B is just that hidden "only road" assumption for this argument.

So B isn't about people crossing during the blocked years - it's the quiet requirement that the bridge was the sole entry route. Without it, the conclusion falls apart.

Answer: B
