If its scheduled I think it will get higher attendance. Also I miss the list of who is on chat at the top of the page...I think people are much more likely to stop by if they see 4 or 5 people.

I would be interested in the chat as well - I think the key is having it once a week at a set time and also, if possible, have a list of all the possible student attendants and/or maybe of the students who will be on the chat next week.

As to the list of people in the chat - that has been deemed technically impossible and abandoned after numerous attempts. The only option to have that list of members displayed in the status is to use a non-IRC client, which is an issue with a number of members. I'd recommend, however, that we still use something like this and for the time of chat, post an announcement on the site (perhaps a bit in advance) about the upcoming chat.

We can also promote it on the forum and BW. If we can get commitment for the next session from current students, I don't think participation on the user side will be an issue. As to the numbers, if we have as few as 2-3 current students, that will work, so don't think we need huge numbers. If we have more - that's even better as people will be more likely to join if there are students from their target schools.

Just some thoughts....

Is the idea to have a specific topic ie applications, life as a student, careers etc. or just a general discussion.

river, right now, I am just gauging interest. as for topics, one way would to be assemble questions from members and share them with the current students in advance and set an agenda based on that.

This agenda will let users know what to expect and current students will have some idea of what to say. This will save time and we can have an archive of the chat available for review later.

I like the idea of having a few directed chats since it would allow for transcripts. Kind of like the chats accepted.com has with admissions officers and current students. However, there is so much stuff on admissions and applications but I dont know of any site that has real time chats about student life, classes, recruiting, etc. Maybe schools do that but it would be nice to get students from multiple schools talking about their experiences.

river, it looks like everyone is busy working on their application right now. we will eventually get to the point where chats will become a regular thing - the first few attempts at conversation might need structure and then people can improvise.

I think transcripts is a great idea.

As to the value - I believe it is about having a chat with the person who has already crossed the line or river ;) and is already on the other side, and has a perfect 20/20 hindsight. To me, that's very valuable, so I am hoping it will be valuable to members as well, but let me know if I am expecting too much.

As to the structure, needs to be a moderated chat.
I would do a total length of 30 min (to start; we can change later)
The first 15 mins could be moderator questions about current life, expectations, professors, classes, load, etc.
The next 15 mins could be open questions and this could be done via a moderator if the group is large, but I think we can start with just open discussion (can always moderate if needed).

Feel free to suggest anything else.

We should do this as soon as possible. Some R1 deadlines are less than a month away. :)
