I will just give examples of the things that I wrote in my short essays:

1) What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

I am a good backgammon player. Then I elaborate on why the game appeals to me (risks, strategical thinking).

2) What book, play, or movie would you recommend to the admissions committee? Why?

Lord of the Rings. The book made me learn English

3) It is your first day of business school and people are selecting study groups. How would you describe the value you will bring to a study group?

I talked about my sense of humor.

You answer to #2 is the best answer I've ever heard of. Seriously. Thats a fckn brilliant response.

Regarding to Chicago Essay2 below, can I talk about my passion about
community involvement (to help residents by examing their healths) and extracurricular ( such as achievement of gold medal in National Robot Contest)? Can I choose two things to tell?

Nope
That's part of the answer to "why?" question: the Russian translation of the book appealed to me so much, that I resolved to improve my English to be able to read it in original :) How the book appealed to me is the second part of the answer.

You must mean the first question.

The gold medal sounds better. I would just use that.

How about if I combine two things to tell them as " extra-curricular achievements" or
"community involment and achievement." I contribute to my community through contest and my involment. Please advise.

Since it asks for 1 thing, I would talk about the gold medal. There are other questions where you could squeeze in the extra-curric stuff.

1) Anyone have any idea about structure for very short Chicago essay?

Question 1 - What is the one thing that most people do not know about you?

Question 2 - What book, play, or movie would you recommend to the admissions committee? Why?

Question 3 - If the admissions committee were to interview one of your closest colleagues, what aspect of your personal development would this person say is especially important for the admissions committee to know?

Guys,
I was searching for answers to the exact same questions and found this thread. I need some help.
What exactly are the looking for -
Question 1 - Why would it be a secret or why would everyone not know this thing about me? It could always be intepreted as "Why was this guy hiding this all this time"?

Question 2 - What are they looking for? Do I bring out something depicting determination, intelligence, knowlwdge - what?

Question 3 - While discussing "personal development", let's say I mentioned that I have matured over the years. It could also be intepreted as "oh this guy's maturity level is suspect".

How do I go about addressing these concerns?

May be you have a secret desire to work in the porn industry... :-D Just kidding.
The point is not everyone knows everything about you. The idea is to dig deep within yourself and find something that you are passionate about. People know about you as much as you tell them. So go ahead and introspect.

Question 2 - What are they looking for? Do I bring out something depicting determination, intelligence, knowlwdge - what?

It is always beneficial to bring out such traits but in my opinion what they are looking for is to see whether you make sense of what you are saying. Pick anything but the idea is that in 100 words you should be able to aleast convince them a little bit.

Question 3 - While discussing "personal development", let's say I mentioned that I have matured over the years. It could also be intepreted as "oh this guy's maturity level is suspect".

It could be intepreted the way you are saying if and only if you leave it at that. Give a convincing example that made you attain that maturity and also write about other experiences were you were immature. That would give support to the fact that you have learned as you went through life.

IMO, the main idea behind these questions is to see how much you introspected and how well you can argue your case.

Good luck

By the way, porn would be cool - I lost the six pack a year ago though. :arh

Thinking way too much about this.

Most people's relationships are with colleagues. The guy i sit near could tell that he was an olympic rower, were it not for the fact he talks about it all the time. For me, people wouldn't know that I commit a lot of time to charity / am an environmentalist / run an entertainments business / etc". It just isn't something I would talk about.

Chicago continually say they are opening this up to see a bit of character. I would approach it that way - the only one where it really counts to your MBA skills (or not) is question 3.

Hey guys, my recommender wants to help me out. He wants to know why Chicago asks for a sense of humor. He wants to know what they are looking for in answering this question - there's obviously a reason behind it. Any ideas, guys? Thanks!

Basically the question is -

How would you describe the applicant's sense of humor?
