Another option is to hire someone capable to bring in as a consultant and learn from them on the job so to speak.

Of course it helps if you have someone like that in mind and it can absolutely suck if you’re hiring from scratch and don’t have any referrals. This could produce much more immediate results but probably not as fun as going for an NBA in Spain or the United States 😇

Marketing is one such area and hence my focus on that was higher, but other areas of business have significant importance as well.

You may need to dig a little deeper than that to figure out what you want out of the MBA.

Taking your example, assuming marketing is the area of concern you plan to focus on, a few questions for you to think about.

If this is a burning issue for your family business, would it make sense for the management to wait till you apply, get an admit, go through the MBA experience and get back to the business in 2027?

What's stopping them from hiring a marketing guy (with an MBA) right now?

That's just an example. There are other questions for you to think about as well, related to the timing of your application (did you miss applying in R1? what's the R2 strategy?), the test scores (do you have one? is it competitive? retake planned?), and the takeaways (short/long-term goals).

Once you've thought through the details, you'll have more clarity on the way forward. It'll also make your application stronger than other applicants who will come in with more work experience than you do.

Given your background in family business, strategy, and marketing, with a focus on expanding D2C presence, I’d recommend MBA programs known for strong offerings in strategy, marketing, and business operations. Schools like Harvard Business School, INSEAD, and London Business School are renowned for their diverse batch profiles, strong faculty, and curriculum that integrates strategic thinking with operational expertise. Additionally, Kellogg School of Management and Wharton also emphasize marketing and offer excellent industry involvement, making them suitable for your goals. Since you’re not looking for post-MBA recruitment, prioritize programs that have strong alumni networks in family business and entrepreneurship.

Hello folks,

I'm still a bit confused about which programs to apply to for the September 2025 Intake.

A bit about my background.
I come from a traditional business family in India and we have our own business setup (Retail + General Trade Distribution and now starting out D2C via e-commerce) in the consumer appliances category (kitchen). I'll have about 3.5 years of full-time work experience at the time of matriculation (2025 intake), about 2 years of which have been spent in a strategy and business operations (not manufacturing ops) role at a startup with diverse work and project experience during the time there and the remaining would be back in our aforementioned family business, primarily working on expanding our D2C presence and streamlining our marketing (brand and performance) across general trade and modern trade.

I was hoping to get some thoughts and opinions on MBA programs with a focus on strategy, marketing, and business operations, and I mean this in terms of faculty, batch profiles, curriculum, and industry involvement during the program. I assume that recruiters from specific industries are also an indicator of a school or program's focus but I will not likely take a job post-MBA.

I'm hoping to apply to about 4-5 programs idealistically and not a lot, considering this, what programs would you recommend?

Feel free to ask for any additional information if required!

Thanks!
Hi RushabhD,

Thank you for sharing your background—it’s clear that you’ve gained valuable experience in both a startup environment and your family business, especially with a focus on strategy, business operations, and marketing.

For MBA programs that align with your goals in strategy, marketing, and operations, you may want to explore schools with strong ties to industry, robust faculty expertise, and a curriculum designed to enhance your leadership in these areas. Schools like Kellogg, Wharton, INSEAD, and LBS come to mind, given their focus on these disciplines and strong industry connections. Each has a unique edge—whether it's marketing, consulting, or general management, making them highly suited to someone with your entrepreneurial and business background.

I’d recommend connecting with one of our MBA experts to discuss your goals further and help you build a targeted list of schools that will complement your aspirations.
