so .... as to be ...
coming to E, unnecessary usage of conditional If
In general If it were construction is used to indicate something that did not happen but author was hoping for it to happen
and in general as... as construction is used with adjectives
so .... as to be ...

I second the reasoning above.
Just an addition:' as if it were 'usage is used when someone hopes(Not definetly true).. In this context the words 'Indeed' and 'is' show something definate.
