Cold blooded animals, such as snakes, lizards, and salamanders, have developed a variety of mechanisms which keep their body temperatures at a comfortable level.

A. which keep
B. to keep
C. that keep
D. which kept
E. in order to keep

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Answer: B.

The word “which” should be used only for a non-essential clause; in this sentence, the clause after “which” is essential to the meaning of the sentence. That means choices A and D are wrong. Choice C has a plural verb, “keep,” although the subject is the singular “variety.” Choice E uses the unidiomatic “developed…in order to…” when “developed…to” is better.

Hey Bunuel, is "variety" singular??

Hello Blair15,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, yes; "variety" is a singular noun, as it refers to a range or span of elements, not to the elements themselves.

We hope this helps.
All the best!

Variety can't be the subject. It is said that animals mentioned have developed variety of mechanisms. So, each animal has one or more mechanisms to keep the temperature at comfortable level. The variation of one mechanism, in one animal, from another, in another animal or same animal, can't be responsible for such temperature variation.

Could someone help explain the difference between TO and THAT in this context? why B is correct and C is wrong because they both use KEEP as a verb

Purpose of action. They developed the mechanism to do something.
