Hi Dosa,

I couldn't help noticing that your job involves credit card solicitations. I am also employed in a similar industry in India.
I wish I were in your position today and I wouldn't be having cold feet :-)
This is a realisation which comes after 6 dings this year. I did not anticipate how tough this year would be, but you have done wonderfully well and I don't think you should hesitate in matriculating this year.

Cold feet? I thought you were talking about the Ann Arbor weather.

Ross & Fuqua are both fine schools and you've done a fine job by getting in. Pick one and don't look back.

LOL about golf!

But dosa, you'll be fine at either Ross or Duke if you want to explore opportunities. Talk to Aaudetat and she'll tell you what Duke is like.

For VC/PE, the only non UE schools that can give you a chance at VC is Haas, and PE would be Yale.

I would dispute that statement. I think UCLA provides great opportunities for VC, especially with the amount of VC firms that offer fellowships. Plus, at the ross reception yesterday, out of the 10 alums there, 2 were in PE. There was also one other guy runs an international real estate PE firm in San Francisco.

Dosa keeps Duke in the picture just to be nice to aau and the others. Dosa, you cant beat the $30 green fees at the U-M course. Send in your deposit already!

yes, UCLA will give you a chance at VCs, but from what an alum said (who's in VC), it's very hard and only 5 out of 360 in his class (including himself) got into VC. I don't know the numbers at Haas, but I'll investigate.

For PE, there's always a chance to get into PE (one of my Haas buddies is going into PE), but I'm just stating what would make it "easier" (you need the parent school brand name). Most PEs told me that they hire only at H/S, and sometimes not even Wharton.

Ya, I would agree that UE schools give you a leg up in VC/PE recruiting. But you initially said "only" the UE schools will give you "a chance", which was not in sync with what I heard.

my bad, I rephrase to "only UEs will give you a *better* chance" at VC/PEs. Elites will also get you there, albeit a bit harder."

how about that?

Aau- unfortunately I had something come up and am not able to attend BDW. But look forward to visiting Durham in the next month or so.

aaudetat
Go devils!

Dosa, I don't remember...you in for BDW?

Hey, Dosa. Sorry you can't be here this weekend - it's a pretty good time.

Listen, tons of people are in the Duke/Ross decision. I think that's to say that they're similar schools with a lot of the same offerings. You can't go wrong, I would say. I don't know a lot about Ross' career specialties, but I do know about Duke. So let me know if you have questions, and definitely get a hold of me if you come to visit. I can also get you in touch with some friends of mine in various industries: I have friends going in to PE, VC and consulting.

Dosa,
Getting into Ross and Duke is a tremendous accomplishment, and going to either of those schools is an honor for anyone of us. I think that if you were to go through the process again, get into an UE, and matriculate to one, you will find that it was not worth the extra year. Don't get hung up on the categorizations of UE and E. Ross and Duke are amazing schools, very difficult to get into, and they get tons of opportunities in every field. Pick one or the other, you won't regret it; in fact, you might regret it if you don't matriculate this year.

I dispute that as well... Regional non-Elite schools outside of the USA also gives you opportunities. Although the key difference is that you need to know the local language as the VCs are predominantly focused on the region.

The reason i always bring up the "International" perspective, is to try to expand the viewpoints in this forum is to stop if from being overly biaised towards US-centric views. Afterall, a lot of people are paying top dollar for an MBA. Some are not concerned about international mobility, but its important to expand the information to the ones who are concerned about international mobility.

An example is Japan, there are plenty of VC companies here, lot's of people will say a UE or E school will get you a job there... However i would say the more important factor would be your language capability. This equalises the playing field, and you will find Japanese speakers with a good MBA can get into VC in Japan without needing to got to a UE and E school, and would be preferred ahead of a non-Japanese speaking UE candidate, and because of this criteria, some VCs will venture towards the regional schools. Similar principles apply to other regions of course.

parsifal - i like this strategy, i will use it! i think deep down, most of us know where we want to go but are trying to make the best possible decision given our opportunities so we go back and forth between the options instead of just going with our hearts/instincts!
