hi. I am an electrical engineer. I have a 5 year of work experience in power generating company. I can’t seem to understand how I can use my work experience to transition to clean energy as most mba roles I find are in the field of consulting and finance. which colleges will be suitable considering my background. I am not targeting us schools. Canadian, uk and Australian schools are fine.
ramen27Happy to pitch in. See you need to understand that clean energy is a vast spectrum, even if it’s a niche. Popular areas of interest in this are energy and environment, energy finance, alternative energy, cleantech, etc. In each area there could be multiple functions. If you are not interested in consulting (finance seems far-fetched if you have no experience), research which companies you would like to join and contact them now to understand what MBA-level positions they offer. Your current role in power generation, whether you have worked on renewable or non-renewable energy, can help you contextualize the importance of global sustainability trends and clean technologies and make your insights relevant for conversations with recruiters.
You may need to tailor your goal to the school you are applying to and the companies hiring in that region. If you are applying to an MBA program in the EU/UK or US/Canada or Australia, you should research hiring opportunities for energy companies in those respective regions. Look at internship/job reports and see the percentage of jobs in the energy/sustainability sector. You need to do your own research and you cannot trust others to do this for you. Look for schools that have significantly improved their focus on sustainability in recent years through courses and linkages. Almost all top schools in countries have increased the focus now. There are so many in the US. Outside of the US, LBS, INSEAD and other top EU/UK schools have special tie-ups for this pipeline. ExxonMobil, Chevron, Vestas, Siemens and BP are some of the top recruiters in this field, but there are so many hiring from all over!
Reach out should you want professional guidance
Best wishes
