Columbia Business School (CBS) offers rigorous PhD programs through
six academic divisions: Accounting, Business Economics, Decision, Risk, & Operations (DRO), Finance, Management, and Marketing. Doctoral programs at CBS are designed to develop scholars who are capable of advancing the frontiers of knowledge in their respective fields. The Columbia Business School doctoral community consists of
125 students across six programs. The program attracts exceptional students from all over the world who are looking to develop research skills under the tutelage of faculty experts. Students come to the School for the exceptional training but also because they value the diversity, creativity, entrepreneurship and social tolerance that NYC offers.
Academic DivisionsAccountingAccounting Doctoral students are trained to conduct rigorous research in financial and managerial accounting. The program prepares students for careers in scholarly research through courses in accounting and related disciplines such as finance and economics, and through close research collaboration with faculty. Graduates take jobs primarily in academic or research institutions.
Business EconomicsThe Economics Division faculty leads research in various fields, such as macro- and microeconomic theory, labor economics, international economics, development, public economics, organizational and industrial economics, and political economics.
Decision, Risk, and Operations (DRO)The Decision, Risk, and Operations (DRO) division at Columbia Business School is a world leader in research in quantitative, data-driven decision-making through the use of modeling, optimization and the management of uncertainty, and all the other aspects of the operations and analytics functions in firms. Application areas in which the division has strong expertise include revenue management; logistics, distribution and supply-chain management; resource networks and service systems; healthcare operations; marketplace design; quantitative finance, modern market microstructure, and risk management; econometrics; and business analytics.
FinanceFinance Doctoral students are trained in major areas in finance and economics, including, asset pricing, corporate finance, continuous-time models in finance, information economics, international finance, market micro-structure, and banking. The program prepares students for careers in scholarly research, and graduates take jobs primarily in academic or research institutions, while some students opt to work in industry.
ManagementManagement Doctoral students are trained to apply basic social science knowledge and research methods to the study of organizations, their members, and their environment. The program prepares students for careers in scholarly research, and graduates take jobs primarily in academic or research institutions across the world.

Research Rankings as #1 in the world in marketing research productivity for the 2018-2021 period, Columbia Marketing faculty members published 46 articles in the top-tier academic journals* in those 4 years. Current or previous PhD students were co-authors on more than half of those articles.
Columbia Marketing has a long history of producing the most innovative and influential research in the field. Columbia faculty and students have won numerous awards in recognition of pioneering research in marketing, including the John D. C. Little Best Paper Award, the Long-Term Impact Award, the Frank Bass Best Dissertation Paper Award, AMA’s Paul Green Best Paper Award, and AMA’s Marketing Research Sig Award. Students frequently win Marketing Science Institute’s (MSI’s) Alden G. PhD AdmissionsApplicants are required to complete an application including an application form, an essay or essays, two letters of recommendation, transcripts from all post-secondary courses of study, test scores, and an application fee. A checklist and additional information are included below.

Columbia Business School requires that the work contained in your application (including essays) is completely accurate and exclusively your own.
Columbia University permits the use of generative AI tools for idea generation and/or to edit a candidate’s work; however, using these tools to generate complete responses violates the Honor Code. Applicants should not participate in the drafting of letter(s) of recommendation. All application content is subject to verification and adherence to the above requirements.
OFFERS OF ADMISSION WILL BE RESCINDED SHOULD ANY MISREPRESENTATION AND/OR OMISSION OCCUR.TranscriptsA Bachelors degree or the equivalent (i.e., a four-year course of study in an accredited college or university) is required for admission. A Masters degree is not required, although some applicants have a Masters degree. Superior academic performance is expected.
GMAT or GRE ScoresNote: GRE/GMAT scores are OPTIONAL for DRO PhD applicants
Applicants may take either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), but scores from one are required for all applicants with the exception of those applying to the DRO Program. Test scores should be input into the appropriate section of the application. Admitted students will be asked to submit an official copy if there is not one on record. Decisions are not binding until these materials have been received. Test scores are only one of many factors that are considered when the School makes admission decisions and there is no minimum score that must be met in order to apply.
English Equivalency ExamApplicants from abroad must also take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS unless they received a degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction.
EssayEssay is required for the following programs

RecommendationsTwo letters of recommendation are required. However, a total of four may be submitted.
Research Paper (DRO Only, Optional)Applicants to the Decision, Risk, and Operations Division are encouraged to submit up to two research papers as part of their application, if they have them. The application form provides the option to submit research papers under Essays.
Application FeeAn application fee of
US$100 must be submitted with your application. An application is not considered complete until the fee has been paid.
Fee waivers are available to active-duty US military personnel, and members of the Peace Corps, teach for America, Teach for China, or Teach for India who are currently in service. Applicants who qualify for a fee waiver should email a fee waiver request, as well as proof of service, to

Application ProcessFollowing the submission of your application, Admissions Committee will thoroughly review your materials and provide you with a response by the indicated decision date.
If you are accepted, you will receive an invitation to join CBS on campus for a PhD Admitted Students Day, hosted by your program's Academic Division. This exclusive event offer students the opportunity to connect with faculty, future classmates, and gain a deeper insight into life at Columbia Business School.
Funding OptionsDoctoral candidates are
fully funded for the first four years of the program. Fifth year PhD students must work out their funding through one of the academic departments at the school. All funding is processed through the Doctoral office.
FellowshipsAll applicants who apply to the Columbia Business School Doctoral Program are considered for merit-based fellowships. There is no separate financial aid application. Candidates selected for the Doctoral Program in most cases receive merit-based fellowships covering tuition and school expenses, in addition to a stipend for living expenses.
AssistantshipsBoth teaching and research assistantships are available. Students are limited to two assistantships per term, and first-term students are strongly advised to carry only one assistantship.
Tuition ExemptionPhD students receive tuition exemption for up to 15 points per term. Tuition exemption is arranged for all approved coursework while the candidate is in the program.
Research Center Assistantships or GrantsResearch Centers at Columbia Business School also provide focus for faculty and doctoral student research and may provide support for doctoral research through assistantships or direct grants.
