Columbia EMBA: Does Test Waiver Harm Odds of Admission?
If you secure a test waiver at a school like Columbia, which otherwise accepts standardized test scores (GMAT, Executive Assessment, or GRE), will you reduce your chances of admission? This is a question we encounter among prospective Executive MBA candidates. The answer is no: the standardized test waiver should not reduce your odds of success.
Some candidates fear that by requesting a test waiver, the Admissions Committee may perceive them as lazy or unwilling to do hard work to gain admission to the program. That is not the case, and not everyone who requests a waiver will receive it. The EMBA Admissions Committee will only extend a waiver to a candidate it believes has demonstrated strong quantitative skills already, either through prior education or professional work. In that case, by granting the test waiver, the admissions committee indicates that they do not need to review a standardized test score (GMAT, Executive Assessment, or GRE) to make an admissions decision. If you secure a waiver, your process of applying will be easier since you will not need to divert time to preparing for and taking a standardized test. So, the waiver is a good thing if you can secure it!
Best Practices for Securing a Test Waiver (GMAT, EA, GRE)!
To receive a standardized test waiver, you must complete Columbia’s Executive MBA Test Waiver Request Form, which you can secure on the CBS website through the link below. The form requires you to submit your resume and academic transcript(s).
The Executive MBA Test Waiver Request Form specifies, “Currently, test waivers are being granted on a case-by-case basis for individuals applying to our New York-based Executive MBA programs during the 2024 admissions cycle. Test waivers are available to prospective students who demonstrate a level of academic aptitude or professional knowledge that has prepared them for being successful in the program’s core curriculum. To apply for a waiver, please submit a copy of your resume and undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) transcripts. A member of our team will be in touch with you within 5-7 business days.”
If you think you have a case that is not an obvious “yes” for the test waiver, however, consider taking a “best practice” step. You should consider submitting a concise letter summarizing your quantitative work, education, training, and skills. Make a positive decision easy for the Admissions Committee! Highlight the quant-heavy courses you completed in college or after with a great grade. Summarize aspects of your professional work that involve quant, integrative reasoning, and/or data analysis. Be succinct so your letter is an aid and not a burden.
