Hi ross14,

Taking FULL-LENGTH CATs (with the Essay and IR sections) on a consistent basis is an essential part of the study process. As such, you should plan to take a FULL CAT every 1-2 weeks. Since it sounds like you have not taken a CAT in some time, then you should plan to take one soon (perhaps this weekend). Until we have a recent CAT score, we have NO IDEA what your current ability level is, so we have no way to know whether you should adjust your study plan or not going forward. On you have this next CAT result, you should post back here and we can talk through your current study plan.

Hi Rich,

I finally took my first test in about 6 months this weekend. It was a veritas prep test. I don't know how those transition to actual gmat test but my overall score was a 560. My quant was a 40 and my verbal was 27. I am happy to see that my studying over the past few months has seemed to pay off. However, I am not by any means satisfied with that score. I haven't even picked up a verbal book yet as i designated the past two months to strictly quant. Also, while reviewing my test, I missed very "low hanging fruit" questions that I could have easily gotten correct. I am content knowing i got this score without picking up a verbal study book. Any suggestions that i need to take to improve my score to the 700 level would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

-Ross

Hi ross14,

This score is a nice improvement over your prior CAT (especially since you haven't put any work into the Verbal section yet). That having been said, you're going to have to make some BIG improvements to how you handle BOTH the Quant and Verbal sections of the Test to hit your goal score.

1) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
2) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
3) How many hours to you study during a typical week?

Hi Rich, thank you for getting back to me!

I do have an ample amount of time. I am about 8 months removed from undergrad with only 6 months of work experience. Ideally, i would like to apply for the class of 2020 or 2021. I just figured that i would try to knock out the GMAT early so i don't have to worry about it come application time.

I usually put in about 15 hours per week. I know I could be putting in at least 25 but I need to stay focused.

Any suggestions on how to approach the next stage of my studying. should i start studying more advance problems? start studying verbal?

Hi ross14,

Right now, 'advanced' problems are not what you currently need. The Q40 means that you're making little mistakes throughout the Quant section and you're missing out on lots of 'strategy-based' points. Since you also admit to not having done any Verbal work yet, it seems clear that you have some big things to work on before you focus too much on anything that is too advanced.

Having the freedom to not have to rush through your studies can be beneficial (since you're not on an immediate deadline). However, you might be studying in an inefficient way, so you might benefit from investing in a GMAT Course of some type (either Guided Self-Study or instructor-led).
