Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and is required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers usually have training in electronic engineering (or electrical engineering), software design, and hardware-software integration instead. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microcontrollers, microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems work but also how they integrate into the larger picture.
How to Become a Computer Engineer

Education Required

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the professional working in the field of computer engineering in USA held a bachelor’s degree or higher. Bachelor’s degrees in software engineering or computer science are a common place to start. Coursework to prepare the student computer engineer will include such topics as database design, systems analysis, critical thinking and technical writing. Because computer technology is a field that is constantly changing, continued education is vital to a successful career in computer engineering.
Skills Required

People who enjoy a career in computer engineering usually have strong analytical skills and are able to focus on many tasks at once. Because computer engineers must sometimes work with customers and clients, the ability to express computer-related information in layman’s terms is also valued.
Application process:

Application process for colleges offering computer engineering in USA will vary from college to college. Some colleges even require that students pass proficiency tests in math and physics before entering their programs. Some universities require international students to take English proficiency test like TOEFL and IELTS. The reason is to understand student’s capability to be successful engineers. For international students who want to study engineering in the U.S., should do their research and check out the schools’ website to review entrance requirements and degrees available.

Individuals interested in this field may select either a systems or application concentration. Required education for computer engineering is bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or computer science. Projected job growth in this field is 7% from 2012-2022 for all computer hardware engineers. Computer engineers can play various roles in companies some of them are as follows:

Software Developers:

Software developers are professionals who are concerned with facets of the software development process which involves activities such as designing and coding, computer programming, project management, etc.

DBA:

DBA or Database Administrators are the professionals who are bestowed with the job to design, implement, maintain, and repair an organization’s database. DBA professionals are also known as Database Coordinators or Database Programmers in the IT sector.

System Analyst:

Computer engineers who work as systems analysts do research about the existing problems and plan solutions for the problem. They also recommend software and system related problems and coordinate development between business development teams.
